55 WHEREAS, The No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum in
66 Terrell is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a freestanding
77 institution on November 8, 2023; and
88 WHEREAS, Established during World War II as part of the
99 Lend-Lease Act, the No. 1 British Flying Training School in Terrell
1010 was one of six schools in the United States set up to support
1111 England's wartime efforts by training pilots for the Royal Air
1212 Force; between 1941 and 1945, more than 2,000 pilots attended the
1313 school, and many of the British trainees formed lifelong bonds with
1414 the residents of Terrell, who welcomed the student pilots into
1515 their homes and their community; each year, there is a Remembrance
1616 Day ceremony at Oakland Memorial Park to memorialize the 20 cadets
1717 who passed away while training in Terrell; and
1818 WHEREAS, The No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum was
1919 started by former cadets with the mission to honor the sacrifices
2020 made by the pilots, educate citizens about the cooperation between
2121 Britain and America, and honor the connections made between the
2222 cadets and the people of North Texas; aviation enthusiasts, history
2323 buffs, and veterans alike are drawn to the museum's fascinating
2424 holdings, which include artifacts, photographs, logbooks, aircraft
2525 models, training materials, equipment, uniforms, and other
2626 memorabilia; initially housed at the Terrell Municipal Airport, the
2727 museum opened its location on Silent Wings Boulevard on November 8,
2828 2003; and
2929 WHEREAS, Since its founding, the No. 1 British Flying
3030 Training School Museum has celebrated a little-known chapter of
3131 World War II history while honoring the strong bond of friendship
3232 between two great nations, and it is a pleasure to recognize this
3333 important milestone in the history of the institution; now,
3434 therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3636 Legislature hereby commemorate the 20th anniversary of the No. 1
3737 British Flying Training School Museum at its current location and
3838 extend to its volunteers, board of directors, and staff sincere
3939 best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4141 prepared for the museum as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4242 House of Representatives.
