| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Residents of the city of West are coming to Austin on |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | March 15, 2023, to celebrate West Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Established at its present site in 1881, the town |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | was later named West in honor of farmer, postmaster, and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | businessman Thomas West; among those attracted to this vibrant |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | community were Czech immigrants who farmed the land, opened |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | businesses, shared their European culture, and planted roots that |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | are now indelibly woven into the identity of the city; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The people of West embrace their history, and the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | city is widely known and officially designated as the Czech |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Heritage Capital of the State of Texas, and it is informally called |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the "Czech Point of Central Texas"; additionally, it is a popular |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | destination on Labor Day weekend for the annual tradition of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Westfest, a celebration of Old World foods, music, arts and crafts, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and numerous other activities; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, West has become a premier stop for |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | travelers on the I-35 corridor between Dallas and Austin due to the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | bakeries that attract visitors with the promise of kolaches and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | klobasniky, delicious Czech pastries filled with sweet and savory |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | ingredients; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, West is a small town with a big can-do attitude, and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | its citizens may take great pride in their rich heritage as they |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | look forward to the opportunities of the future; now, therefore, be |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | it |

| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 15, 2023, as West Day at the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation. |
