5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Many proud residents of Hill County are gathering in |

6 | 6 | | Austin on March 16, 2023, to celebrate Hill County Day at the State |
---|
7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, On February 7, 1853, Hill County was created from |
---|
9 | 9 | | the western section of Navarro County by an act of the state |
---|
10 | 10 | | legislature; it was named in honor of Dr. George Washington Hill, a |
---|
11 | 11 | | member of the Congress of the Republic of Texas and the secretary of |
---|
12 | 12 | | war and navy under President Sam Houston; later that year, citizens |
---|
13 | 13 | | convened at Lexington on Jack's Branch to elect their public |
---|
14 | 14 | | officials, and Hillsboro was platted and designated as the county |
---|
15 | 15 | | seat; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Hill County have demonstrated lasting |
---|
17 | 17 | | appreciation for the unique history of their area; following a |
---|
18 | 18 | | devastating fire in 1993, they carefully restored the splendid |
---|
19 | 19 | | county courthouse, with assistance from Abbott native Willie |
---|
20 | 20 | | Nelson, who played two benefit concerts for the effort; the Second |
---|
21 | 21 | | Empire-style building, constructed in 1890, is listed in the |
---|
22 | 22 | | National Register of Historic places and continues to serve as a hub |
---|
23 | 23 | | for government operations; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Hill College houses the Texas Heritage Museum, which |
---|
25 | 25 | | boasts an extensive collection of Audie Murphy artifacts, a |
---|
26 | 26 | | 10,000-volume library on the Civil War, and the official Texas |
---|
27 | 27 | | Medal of Honor memorial; while meeting academic and workforce |
---|
28 | 28 | | needs, the college also fosters cultural enrichment through its |
---|
29 | 29 | | popular performing arts series; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Now home to more than 36,000 people, the county |
---|
31 | 31 | | hosts a number of events enjoyed by residents of Hillsboro, |
---|
32 | 32 | | Hubbard, Itasca, Whitney, and other communities; annual favorites |
---|
33 | 33 | | include the county fair, Autumnfest, Cinco de Mayo, Pioneer Days, |

34 | 34 | | and Hubbard City Trade Days; recreational opportunities abound at |
---|
35 | 35 | | Lake Whitney State Park, a prime destination for camping, hiking, |
---|
36 | 36 | | boating, and bird watching; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Stargazers eagerly anticipate April 8, 2024, when |
---|
38 | 38 | | Hillsboro will offer one of the world's best vantage points for |
---|
39 | 39 | | viewing the solar eclipse, according to Astronomy magazine; the |
---|
40 | 40 | | future also holds the opening of a 74,000-square-foot Buc-ees |
---|
41 | 41 | | establishment, a certain boon to the economy; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Changing with the times while maintaining its |
---|
43 | 43 | | friendliness and charm, Hill County continues to cultivate the |
---|
44 | 44 | | qualities that have long made it an outstanding place in which to |
---|
45 | 45 | | live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 16, 2023, as Hill County Day at |
---|
48 | 48 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
---|
49 | 49 | | best wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin. |
