5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop in Austin has been |

8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Introduced in 1998, the America's Classics Awards |

9 | 9 | | are given to locally owned restaurants that have a timeless appeal |
---|
10 | 10 | | and are beloved regionally for quality food that reflects the |
---|
11 | 11 | | character of the local community; this year's winners will be |
---|
12 | 12 | | celebrated at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony |
---|
13 | 13 | | on June 5; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The history of Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop dates back |
---|
15 | 15 | | to 1935, when Sophia and Florentino De La O opened La Oriental |
---|
16 | 16 | | Grocery & Bakery out of their home on East 9th Street; the bakery |
---|
17 | 17 | | operated for 22 years until its closing in 1957; the couple started |
---|
18 | 18 | | a second bakery in 1961, and the following year, Mrs. De La O sold |
---|
19 | 19 | | it to her eldest son, Joe Avila, and his wife, Paula; Mr. Avila |
---|
20 | 20 | | subsequently renamed the establishment Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop; |
---|

22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Today, the bakery is led by three generations of |

23 | 23 | | Avila women, Mrs. Avila herself, Mr. and Mrs. Avila's daughters, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Rose Ann and Carolina, and their granddaughter, Regina; in the six |
---|
25 | 25 | | decades since its official establishment in 1962, Joe's Bakery has |
---|
26 | 26 | | expanded, moved locations, and witnessed myriad changes within the |
---|
27 | 27 | | East Austin community; over the years, the bakery has gained a loyal |
---|
28 | 28 | | following, and it has continued to serve as a meeting place for |
---|
29 | 29 | | regulars and newcomers alike; it is renowned for its colorful |
---|
30 | 30 | | Mexican pastries, known as pan dulce, and its menu also features |
---|
31 | 31 | | authentic Tex-Mex cuisine, including migas, home-style pork carne |
---|
32 | 32 | | guisada, and breakfast tacos on homemade flour tortillas; committed |
---|
33 | 33 | | to giving back to the community, the shop doubled as a general store |
---|
34 | 34 | | during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it often houses voter |
---|
35 | 35 | | registration stations on the front patio; and |

36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Locally owned and operated restaurants add to the |

37 | 37 | | prosperity and culinary diversity of the Lone Star State, and Joe's |

38 | 38 | | Bakery & Coffee Shop's national recognition is a fitting tribute to |

39 | 39 | | its important role as a pillar of stability and history within the |

40 | 40 | | rapidly changing East Austin community; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop on its |

43 | 43 | | receipt of the 2023 America's Classics: Texas Region award and |

44 | 44 | | extend to all those associated with the establishment sincere best |
