5	5	WHEREAS, Memories of a life well lived may help to comfort
6	6	those saddened by the passing of Iris Brite Porter on July 19, 2022,
7	7	at the age of 89; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born in Pleasanton on July 12, 1933, to Thomas and
9	9	Nora Brite, the former Iris Wilsie Brite grew up with the
10	10	companionship of four older siblings, Rita, Ralph, Bessie, and
11	11	Taylor; her father taught her that education was the key to success,
12	12	and through hard work and discipline, she was named valedictorian
13	13	of Pleasanton High School before graduating summa cum laude from
14	14	Texas State University in 1953; and
15	15	WHEREAS, The following year, she exchanged wedding vows with
16	16	Norman Porter, with whom she shared more than six decades of
17	17	marriage until his passing; she was a devoted mother to her son,
18	18	Norman, and also cherished her three grandchildren, her nine
19	19	great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews; and
20	20	WHEREAS, After teaching in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and
21	21	Bronte, Mrs. Porter returned to Pleasanton, where she became the
22	22	district's only special education teacher; she was later elevated
23	23	to the role of special education director, before starting and
24	24	directing a special education co-op of five school districts; she
25	25	was deeply dedicated to ensuring that all students with
26	26	disabilities were provided the support they needed and were treated
27	27	with respect and kindness; and
28	28	WHEREAS, In 1990, Mrs. Porter began a new chapter in her life
29	29	when she entered law school; she graduated from St. Mary's
30	30	University School of Law at the age of 60 and was chosen by her peers
31	31	to be the featured speaker at her graduation ceremony; from there,
32	32	she practiced law up until the date of her passing, and she earned a
33	33	reputation as a tough but caring advocate for her clients, most of
34	34	whom had nowhere else to turn for help; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Iris Brite Porter inspired many people through her
36	36	exemplary professional achievements and her fierce commitment to
37	37	the underserved, and she will long be remembered with affection and
38	38	admiration by all who had the good fortune to know her; now,
39	39	therefore, be it
40	40	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
41	41	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Iris Brite Porter and
42	42	extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her son,
43	43	Norman Porter, and his wife, Amy; to her grandchildren, Nolan Brite
44	44	Porter and his wife, Lisa, Erin Kathleen Porter Wells and her
45	45	husband, JJ, and Ross Shafer Porter and his wife, Estelle; to her
46	46	great-grandchildren, Miles, London, Noah, and Harlow Iris Porter,
47	47	Lake, Ruby, and Forrest Wells, and Evangeline and Charli Porter;
48	48	and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
51	51	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Iris Brite
52	52	Porter.
