44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Memories of a life well lived may help to comfort
66 those saddened by the passing of Iris Brite Porter on July 19, 2022,
77 at the age of 89; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Pleasanton on July 12, 1933, to Thomas and
99 Nora Brite, the former Iris Wilsie Brite grew up with the
1010 companionship of four older siblings, Rita, Ralph, Bessie, and
1111 Taylor; her father taught her that education was the key to success,
1212 and through hard work and discipline, she was named valedictorian
1313 of Pleasanton High School before graduating summa cum laude from
1414 Texas State University in 1953; and
1515 WHEREAS, The following year, she exchanged wedding vows with
1616 Norman Porter, with whom she shared more than six decades of
1717 marriage until his passing; she was a devoted mother to her son,
1818 Norman, and also cherished her three grandchildren, her nine
1919 great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews; and
2020 WHEREAS, After teaching in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and
2121 Bronte, Mrs. Porter returned to Pleasanton, where she became the
2222 district's only special education teacher; she was later elevated
2323 to the role of special education director, before starting and
2424 directing a special education co-op of five school districts; she
2525 was deeply dedicated to ensuring that all students with
2626 disabilities were provided the support they needed and were treated
2727 with respect and kindness; and
2828 WHEREAS, In 1990, Mrs. Porter began a new chapter in her life
2929 when she entered law school; she graduated from St. Mary's
3030 University School of Law at the age of 60 and was chosen by her peers
3131 to be the featured speaker at her graduation ceremony; from there,
3232 she practiced law up until the date of her passing, and she earned a
3333 reputation as a tough but caring advocate for her clients, most of
3434 whom had nowhere else to turn for help; and
3535 WHEREAS, Iris Brite Porter inspired many people through her
3636 exemplary professional achievements and her fierce commitment to
3737 the underserved, and she will long be remembered with affection and
3838 admiration by all who had the good fortune to know her; now,
3939 therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4141 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Iris Brite Porter and
4242 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her son,
4343 Norman Porter, and his wife, Amy; to her grandchildren, Nolan Brite
4444 Porter and his wife, Lisa, Erin Kathleen Porter Wells and her
4545 husband, JJ, and Ross Shafer Porter and his wife, Estelle; to her
4646 great-grandchildren, Miles, London, Noah, and Harlow Iris Porter,
4747 Lake, Ruby, and Forrest Wells, and Evangeline and Charli Porter;
4848 and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5151 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Iris Brite
5252 Porter.
