| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Galveston Independent School District and its |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | board of trustees are rededicating Tor Baseball Field in honor of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | civic leader Roger "Bo" Quiroga at a ceremony on March 24, 2023; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Located on Galveston Island at 83rd Street and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Stewart Road, the field is home to the Ball High School baseball |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | team, and its renaming is an especially fitting tribute to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Mr. Quiroga, who was a star pitcher for the Golden Tornadoes and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | helped the team advance to the state playoffs in 1971; later that |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | year, he was drafted by the Washington Senators in the first round |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | of the Major League Baseball amateur draft; over the course of his |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | career, he played in 77 games with the Pulaski Phillies, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Spartanburg Phillies, and Rocky Mount Phillies before his |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | retirement in 1975; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, A Galveston native, Mr. Quiroga went on to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | distinguish himself as a committed champion for his community, most |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | notably during his three terms as the city's mayor; he took office |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | in 1998 and continued to serve until 2004, when he concluded his |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | tenure due to term limits; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The rededication of the Ball High baseball field |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | will establish a lasting and well-deserved monument to an esteemed |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | citizen, and it is a privilege to join in commending Mr. Quiroga for |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | his achievements and his commitment to Galveston ISD and the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | residents of Galveston; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the renaming of Tor Baseball Field |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | in honor of Roger "Bo" Quiroga and extend to all those attending the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | ceremony sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable event; |
