| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Representatives of the Houston Area Urban League and |

| 6 | 6 | | the Austin Area Urban League are visiting the State Capitol on |

| 7 | 7 | | April 4, 2023, and the event provides a fitting opportunity to pay |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | tribute to the vital work of these notable organizations; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1910, the National Urban League is the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | country's oldest and largest community-based movement dedicated to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | empowering African Americans, both socially and economically; |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | today, the group boasts 90 local affiliates across the U.S.; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The Houston Area Urban League was first organized in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | 1968; advocating for people of all races, genders, ages, and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | disabilities in economically disadvantaged areas of metropolitan |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Houston, the organization offers a variety of programs related to |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | education and youth development, workforce and economic |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | development, workforce training, housing, social justice, and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | health and wellness; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1977, the Austin Area Urban |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | League has been improving the quality of life in Central Texas; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | aligning with the five pillars of the National Urban League, the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Austin affiliate meets the needs of underserved local residents |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | through programming and services focused on the areas of health, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | housing, justice, advocacy, education and youth development, and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | workforce and career readiness; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, With an enduring commitment to civil rights, social |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | justice, and economic progress, the members of both the Houston |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Area Urban League and the Austin Area Urban League are making a |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | lasting, positive impact on their communities, and their endeavors |

| 31 | 31 | | are greatly benefiting innumerable Texans; now, therefore, be it |

| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 4, 2023, as Urban League Day at |

| 34 | 34 | | the State Capitol and extend to the participants sincere best |

| 35 | 35 | | wishes for a meaningful and memorable visit; and, be it further |
