44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, All who shared in the life of Johnny Welton Self were
66 deeply saddened by his passing on December 21, 2022, at the age of
77 72; and
88 WHEREAS, John Self was born to Helen Self Hickman and Jonas
99 Banks on January 29, 1950, in Zachary, Louisiana, and he grew up
1010 with the companionship of four siblings, Clarence, Billy, Barbara,
1111 and Ernest; after graduating from Chaneyville High School, he
1212 obtained a bachelor's degree in business management at Southern
1313 University in Baton Rouge; and
1414 WHEREAS, A trailblazer throughout his career, Mr. Self was
1515 the first Black firefighter to serve with the Arlington Fire
1616 Department, beginning his tenure in 1973, and he went on to work for
1717 the office of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts for several
1818 years; when he was hired by TXU Energy/Oncor in 1999, he was the
1919 first African American customer service representative at the
2020 company, and with his appointment as vice president in 2004, he
2121 became the first Black male to hold that post; his responsibilities
2222 encompassed government affairs, and he emerged as a well-known
2323 figure at the State Capitol, serving as a trusted advisor to
2424 numerous elected officials; after retiring from TXU Energy/Oncor in
2525 2008, he continued to work as a political consultant in Austin; and
2626 WHEREAS, From an early age, Mr. Self was sustained by a deep
2727 and abiding faith; a longtime congregant of Mount Olive Baptist
2828 Church, he was a member of the executive board as well as a deacon,
2929 usher, and Sunday school teacher; moreover, he played an
3030 instrumental role in the construction of Lucille Baptist Church in
3131 Palmer; and
3232 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Self enjoyed the love and
3333 support of his wife, Bea, with whom he shared a rewarding marriage
3434 that spanned nearly five decades; he took great pride in their
3535 children, Jeremy and Jarita, and over the years, he had the pleasure
3636 of welcoming three grandchildren into the family; and
3737 WHEREAS, An accomplished professional, an engaged citizen,
3838 and a devoted family man, John Self leaves behind a record of good
3939 works and impressive achievements that his loved ones can remember
4040 with pride; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4242 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Johnny Welton Self and
4343 extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
4444 Beatrice Self; to his children, Jeremy Self and his wife, Angela,
4545 and Jarita Gardner and her husband, Troy; to his grandchildren,
4646 Tristan, Tatum, and Troy Johnny; to his siblings, Clarence Self and
4747 his wife, Dafiney, Billy Self, and Barbara Anderson; to his
4848 sisters-in-law, Mary Tapps, Gladys Bets, Dorothy Shaw and her
4949 husband, David, Shirley Tapps, Barbara Netters, Pamela Jackson, and
5050 Diana Davis; to his brother-in-law, Raymond Tapps and his wife,
5151 Gayle; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it
5252 further
5353 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5454 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5555 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Johnny
5656 Self.
