5	5	WHEREAS, All who shared in the life of Johnny Welton Self were
6	6	deeply saddened by his passing on December 21, 2022, at the age of
7	7	72; and
8	8	WHEREAS, John Self was born to Helen Self Hickman and Jonas
9	9	Banks on January 29, 1950, in Zachary, Louisiana, and he grew up
10	10	with the companionship of four siblings, Clarence, Billy, Barbara,
11	11	and Ernest; after graduating from Chaneyville High School, he
12	12	obtained a bachelor's degree in business management at Southern
13	13	University in Baton Rouge; and
14	14	WHEREAS, A trailblazer throughout his career, Mr. Self was
15	15	the first Black firefighter to serve with the Arlington Fire
16	16	Department, beginning his tenure in 1973, and he went on to work for
17	17	the office of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts for several
18	18	years; when he was hired by TXU Energy/Oncor in 1999, he was the
19	19	first African American customer service representative at the
20	20	company, and with his appointment as vice president in 2004, he
21	21	became the first Black male to hold that post; his responsibilities
22	22	encompassed government affairs, and he emerged as a well-known
23	23	figure at the State Capitol, serving as a trusted advisor to
24	24	numerous elected officials; after retiring from TXU Energy/Oncor in
25	25	2008, he continued to work as a political consultant in Austin; and
26	26	WHEREAS, From an early age, Mr. Self was sustained by a deep
27	27	and abiding faith; a longtime congregant of Mount Olive Baptist
28	28	Church, he was a member of the executive board as well as a deacon,
29	29	usher, and Sunday school teacher; moreover, he played an
30	30	instrumental role in the construction of Lucille Baptist Church in
31	31	Palmer; and
32	32	WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Self enjoyed the love and
33	33	support of his wife, Bea, with whom he shared a rewarding marriage
34	34	that spanned nearly five decades; he took great pride in their
35	35	children, Jeremy and Jarita, and over the years, he had the pleasure
36	36	of welcoming three grandchildren into the family; and
37	37	WHEREAS, An accomplished professional, an engaged citizen,
38	38	and a devoted family man, John Self leaves behind a record of good
39	39	works and impressive achievements that his loved ones can remember
40	40	with pride; now, therefore, be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
42	42	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Johnny Welton Self and
43	43	extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
44	44	Beatrice Self; to his children, Jeremy Self and his wife, Angela,
45	45	and Jarita Gardner and her husband, Troy; to his grandchildren,
46	46	Tristan, Tatum, and Troy Johnny; to his siblings, Clarence Self and
47	47	his wife, Dafiney, Billy Self, and Barbara Anderson; to his
48	48	sisters-in-law, Mary Tapps, Gladys Bets, Dorothy Shaw and her
49	49	husband, David, Shirley Tapps, Barbara Netters, Pamela Jackson, and
50	50	Diana Davis; to his brother-in-law, Raymond Tapps and his wife,
51	51	Gayle; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it
52	52	further
53	53	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
54	54	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
55	55	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Johnny
56	56	Self.
