| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Del Rio and Val Verde County are |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | gathering in Austin on March 21, 2023, to celebrate Val Verde |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | County-Del Rio Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The brushlands along the Rio Grande were first |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | inhabited more than 6,000 years ago by native peoples whose cave |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | paintings are still visible; the community of San Felipe Del Rio was |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | established in 1868, and Val Verde County was organized in 1885; |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | that same year, the colorful Judge Roy Bean was elected justice of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the peace in Langtry, where he became known as "the Law West of the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Pecos," making his distinctive rulings from the Jersey Lilly |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Saloon; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Since its earliest days, Val Verde County has been a |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | center for sheep and goat ranching, and the wool and mohair |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | industries continue to be central to its economy; other important |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | employers include Laughlin Air Force Base, the U.S. Border Patrol, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and the National Park Service; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Tourism and trade with Mexico are also part of the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | life of the county; opportunities for boating, fishing, birding, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and hiking are found at the Amistad National Recreation Area, and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the Whitehead Memorial Museum in Del Rio and the Judge Roy Bean |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Visitor Center in Langtry attract visitors interested in the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | heritage of the county's frontier days; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | an even brighter future, the people of Val Verde County may take |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | great pride in the important role their unique region continues to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | play in the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 21, 2023, as Val Verde |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | County-Del Rio Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to |

| 35 | 35 | | the visiting delegation. |
