44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Residents of McAllen are mourning the loss of
66 longtime civic leader and admired businessman Jack Earl Cawood, who
77 passed away on January 9, 2023, at the age of 92; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of William and Genevieve Cawood, Jack Cawood
99 was born in Harlan, Kentucky, on February 21, 1930, and at the age
1010 of 13, he moved to McAllen with his mother; he served in the Civil
1111 Air Patrol during World War II, hunting for German U-boats; after
1212 completing his bachelor's degree in business administration at The
1313 University of Texas at Austin, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force,
1414 and he was stationed in Alaska and Idaho; he went on to serve for a
1515 decade in the reserve and attained the rank of captain; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mr. Cawood pursued a career in real estate that
1717 would span approximately 50 years; his warmth and charm were
1818 ideally suited to the field, and he founded Action Realty and helped
1919 develop several neighborhoods; dedicated to the advancement of his
2020 profession, he was active in the McAllen Board of Realtors, the
2121 Texas Association of Realtors, and the National Association of
2222 Realtors; he was known for his honesty and integrity and pushed for
2323 legislation to hold all Realtors to high ethical standards; in
2424 1985, he was named Realtor of the Year by the Texas Association of
2525 Realtors; and
2626 WHEREAS, A pillar of his community, Mr. Cawood was a member
2727 of the McAllen Lions Club for more than three decades and held the
2828 office of president; he also served as chair of the McAllen
2929 Municipal Hospital Board, and he mentored youth as a Boy Scout
3030 master and merit badge counselor; in addition, he used his
3131 influence to get potholes filled and street lights repaired; he was
3232 a cofounder of Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, which later merged
3333 with Texans for Lawsuit Reform; and
3434 WHEREAS, Mr. Cawood shared a fulfilling marriage of 58 years
3535 with his wife, the former Margaret Louise Berens; they were the
3636 parents of two sons, William and Paul, and a daughter, Mary Ann; an
3737 avid outdoorsman, Mr. Cawood loved teaching his children how to
3838 hunt, fish, and camp; in 2007, he and his wife retired to Blue Skies
3939 of Texas in San Antonio, where they enjoyed their shared interest in
4040 the Commemorative Air Force and wood carving; Mrs. Cawood preceded
4141 her husband in death; and
4242 WHEREAS, Although Jack Cawood is sadly missed, he leaves
4343 behind a record of civic engagement that his loved ones can remember
4444 with pride; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4646 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Jack Earl Cawood and
4747 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4848 children, Mary Ann Cawood and Paul Cawood and his wife, Candace; to
4949 his brother, William Cawood; to his grandchildren; and to his many
5050 other relatives and friends; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5252 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5353 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jack Earl
5454 Cawood.
