| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Cumbia legend Fito Olivares of Houston passed away |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | on March 17, 2023, at the age of 75, bringing a great loss to his |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | family, friends, and legion of fans; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born Rodolfo Olivares in Ciudad Camargo, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Tamaulipas, Mexico, in 1947, Fito Olivares began playing saxophone |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | professionally in his teens; he was recruited by the group Dueto |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Estrella, which performed his first song, "Ya No Eres Mía"; in the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | 1970s, he settled in the Bayou City, where he formed Grupo La Pura |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Sabrosura with his brothers, Javier on vocals and Jaime on |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | keyboards; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The band eventually signed to Gil Records, and it |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | began its rise in the 1980s with such hits as "La Gallina" and "La |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Negra Catalina"; songs such as "Juana la Cubana" and "El |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Colesterol" became party staples, played at many weddings and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | quinceañeras; more than 50 other artists recorded "Juana la |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Cubana," and "El Colesterol" received an ASCAP award for Best Song |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | in the Regional Mexican category; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, With a distinctive, sax-fueled style rooted in his |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | native Mexico, Mr. Olivares ushered in a new era of cumbia; his |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | influence has endured, and in recent years, he was featured on a |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | remix of "Thrift Shop" by rappers Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and his |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | classic "Cumbia de la Cobra" went viral on TikTok; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Fito Olivares brought joy to innumerable people, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | filling dance floors at countless celebrations, and although he |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | will be deeply missed, his music will continue to enrich the lives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | of listeners for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Fito Olivares and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | wife, Griselda Olivares; to his children, Rodolfo, Alexandra, and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Juan Pablo; and to his other relatives, many friends, and all who |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | mourn his passing; and, be it further |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rodolfo |
