44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A life dedicated to social and environmental justice
66 and to the service of her nation drew to a close with the death of
77 Judith P. Ackerman of El Paso on November 6, 2022, at the age of 69;
88 and
99 WHEREAS, Judy Ackerman joined the 28th Infantry of the
1010 Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1980, embarking upon a
1111 distinguished 27-year career in the U.S. Army; she was one of the
1212 first women to teach a course for primary noncommissioned officers
1313 in the NCO education system, and she was a lesson developer at the
1414 U.S. Army's Sergeants Major Academy and the first sergeant for the
1515 Equipment Maintenance Center of 21st Theater Support Command in
1616 Kaiserslautern, Germany; throughout her military service, she was a
1717 champion for diversity and equal opportunity, and she retired from
1818 the army in 2007 at the rank of sergeant major; and
1919 WHEREAS, In 1995, Sergeant Ackerman transferred to Fort
2020 Bliss, and she fell in love with the El Paso region; she was a leader
2121 in the effort to declare the Castner Range of the Franklin Mountains
2222 as a national monument, and in 2012 she handcuffed herself to a
2323 bulldozer to protect the Rio Bosque wetlands from construction; she
2424 also played a leading role in the development of the Knapp Land
2525 Nature Preserve; and
2626 WHEREAS, A member of the League of Women Voters and a
2727 deputized voter registrar, Ms. Ackerman signed up thousands of
2828 voters in El Paso County; she also helped to found the Viejitas for
2929 Choice network to preserve reproductive rights; she was an active
3030 member of many other organizations, including the Sierra Club, the
3131 Friends of the Rio Bosque, the El Paso Chapter of the Native Plant
3232 Society of New Mexico, the Trans-Pecos Chapter Texas Master
3333 Naturalists, and the Frontera Land Alliance; and
3434 WHEREAS, Judy Ackerman lived a rich and purposeful life
3535 dedicated to conserving the natural splendor of El Paso and to
3636 fighting for social justice, and her passion and commitment will
3737 forever inspire all those who knew and loved her; now, therefore, be
3838 it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Judy Ackerman and
4141 extend sincere condolences to her husband, Jamie Ackerman, to the
4242 other members of her family, and to her countless friends; and, be
4343 it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4646 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Judy
4747 Ackerman.
