| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | memories of Celestino Mendez Jr., who died on May 8, 2022, at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | age of 91; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Celestino Mendez was born in San Marcos on |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | September 10, 1930, to Celestino Mendez Sr. and Amalia Mendez, and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | he grew up with five siblings, Ruth, Servando, Cecilia, Alicia, and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Helen; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Mendez |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War; in civilian |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | life, he committed himself to serving his beloved San Marcos |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | community, promoting education and fighting for equal rights and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | equal opportunities for minorities; in the mid-1960s, he was |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | president of the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | District board, and he was a founding board member of Centro |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Cultural Hispano de San Marcos; he remained dedicated to his fellow |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | veterans as a lifelong member of the American GI Forum, which he |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | served for many years as commander; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Mendez shared a rewarding marriage with his |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | wife, Monica, and he was a loving father to his daughters, Monique |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and Rose, his stepson, Andrew, and his son, the late Jeffrey Wayne |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Mendez; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man, a respected community leader, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and a proud veteran, Celestino Mendez lived a full and generous life |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | devoted to the service of others, and he leaves behind a legacy that |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | therefore, be it |

| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Celestino |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Mendez Jr. and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |

| 34 | 34 | | family: to his wife, Monica Mendez; to his daughters, Monique |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Mendez and Rose Mendez Segrave and her husband, Brian; to his |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | stepson, Andrew Mendez, and his wife, Alejandra; to his former |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | wife, Elida Simmons; to his sister, Ruth Mendez Rosales; and to his |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
