44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
66 memories of Celestino Mendez Jr., who died on May 8, 2022, at the
77 age of 91; and
88 WHEREAS, Celestino Mendez was born in San Marcos on
99 September 10, 1930, to Celestino Mendez Sr. and Amalia Mendez, and
1010 he grew up with five siblings, Ruth, Servando, Cecilia, Alicia, and
1111 Helen; and
1212 WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Mendez
1313 served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War; in civilian
1414 life, he committed himself to serving his beloved San Marcos
1515 community, promoting education and fighting for equal rights and
1616 equal opportunities for minorities; in the mid-1960s, he was
1717 president of the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School
1818 District board, and he was a founding board member of Centro
1919 Cultural Hispano de San Marcos; he remained dedicated to his fellow
2020 veterans as a lifelong member of the American GI Forum, which he
2121 served for many years as commander; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Mendez shared a rewarding marriage with his
2323 wife, Monica, and he was a loving father to his daughters, Monique
2424 and Rose, his stepson, Andrew, and his son, the late Jeffrey Wayne
2525 Mendez; and
2626 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, a respected community leader,
2727 and a proud veteran, Celestino Mendez lived a full and generous life
2828 devoted to the service of others, and he leaves behind a legacy that
2929 will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now,
3030 therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3232 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Celestino
3333 Mendez Jr. and extend sincere condolences to the members of his
3434 family: to his wife, Monica Mendez; to his daughters, Monique
3535 Mendez and Rose Mendez Segrave and her husband, Brian; to his
3636 stepson, Andrew Mendez, and his wife, Alejandra; to his former
3737 wife, Elida Simmons; to his sister, Ruth Mendez Rosales; and to his
3838 other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4040 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4141 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Celestino
4242 Mendez.
