66 WHEREAS, Becky Calzada of FReadom Fighters was selected as a
77 recipient of the 2022 Intellectual Freedom Award from the American
88 Association of School Librarians; and
99 WHEREAS, Established in 1982, the Intellectual Freedom Award
1010 recognizes professionals who have demonstrated exceptional effort
1111 in upholding the principles of intellectual freedom as set forth by
1212 the American Association of School Librarians and the American
1313 Library Association; and
1414 WHEREAS, Together with Carolyn Foote and Nancy Jo Lambert,
1515 Ms. Calzada created FReadom Fighters in November 2021 as a way to
1616 highlight the positive work of school librarians, celebrate the
1717 richness of children's and young adult literature, and provide
1818 support for library professionals, teachers, and authors in the
1919 face of escalating book challenges; the organization has since
2020 gained a Twitter following of more than 15,000 people and created a
2121 website where weekly actions are posted inviting the public to
2222 raise awareness and advocate for the freedom of school library
2323 users to access information; and
2424 WHEREAS, Reading widely introduces young people to new words,
2525 new concepts, and whole new worlds, allowing them to become more
2626 informed and insightful members of society, and through her work as
2727 a cofounder of FReadom Fighters, Becky Calzada is helping to
2828 protect students' rights to explore, learn, and grow; now,
2929 therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3131 Legislature hereby congratulate Becky Calzada on her receipt of the
3232 2022 Intellectual Freedom Award from the American Association of
3333 School Librarians and extend to her sincere best wishes for
3434 continued success in her important endeavors; and, be it further
3535 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3636 prepared for Ms. Calzada as an expression of high regard by the
3737 Texas House of Representatives.
