5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Hays-Caldwell Women's Center celebrated the |

6 | 6 | | opening of the Marla R. Johnson Housing Center on March 25, 2022; |
---|
7 | 7 | | and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Originally formed in 1978 as the Hays County Women's |
---|
9 | 9 | | Center, the Hays-Caldwell Women's Center is a nonprofit |
---|
10 | 10 | | organization that offers free and confidential services to adults, |
---|
11 | 11 | | youth, and children who are victims of family violence, dating |
---|
12 | 12 | | violence, sexual assault, and child abuse; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The Marla R. Johnson Housing Center, named after the |
---|
14 | 14 | | longtime executive director of HCWC, provides transitional housing |
---|
15 | 15 | | for survivors of domestic abuse and their family members; the |
---|
16 | 16 | | 22,500-square-foot complex was designed to accommodate up to 18 |
---|
17 | 17 | | families in apartment-style units for an extended period of time, |
---|
18 | 18 | | giving residents the opportunity to find employment and more |
---|
19 | 19 | | permanent living situations; in addition, there are Head Start and |
---|
20 | 20 | | Early Head Start programs on site to provide quality child care and |
---|
21 | 21 | | early childhood education, alleviating one of the greatest barriers |
---|
22 | 22 | | to a woman and her children leaving an abusive situation; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Financed through public and private donations, the |
---|
24 | 24 | | $5 million project is located on property donated by the City of San |
---|
25 | 25 | | Marcos and supplements the existing HCWC shelter for short-term |
---|
26 | 26 | | emergency situations; moreover, the complex was made possible with |
---|
27 | 27 | | the support of the Austin chapter of HomeAid, a national nonprofit |
---|
28 | 28 | | that assists organizations that help fight homelessness; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, By providing victims of domestic violence with a |
---|
30 | 30 | | safe place to live, the Marla R. Johnson Housing Center empowers |
---|
31 | 31 | | those it serves to build a brighter future for themselves and their |
---|
32 | 32 | | families, and in so doing, it contributes immeasurably to the |
---|
33 | 33 | | strength of the community; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the opening of the Marla R. Johnson |
---|
36 | 36 | | Housing Center and commend all those involved in bringing the |
---|
37 | 37 | | project to fruition; and, be it further |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
39 | 39 | | prepared for the Marla R. Johnson Housing Center as an expression of |
---|
40 | 40 | | high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
