44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Hays-Caldwell Women's Center celebrated the
66 opening of the Marla R. Johnson Housing Center on March 25, 2022;
77 and
88 WHEREAS, Originally formed in 1978 as the Hays County Women's
99 Center, the Hays-Caldwell Women's Center is a nonprofit
1010 organization that offers free and confidential services to adults,
1111 youth, and children who are victims of family violence, dating
1212 violence, sexual assault, and child abuse; and
1313 WHEREAS, The Marla R. Johnson Housing Center, named after the
1414 longtime executive director of HCWC, provides transitional housing
1515 for survivors of domestic abuse and their family members; the
1616 22,500-square-foot complex was designed to accommodate up to 18
1717 families in apartment-style units for an extended period of time,
1818 giving residents the opportunity to find employment and more
1919 permanent living situations; in addition, there are Head Start and
2020 Early Head Start programs on site to provide quality child care and
2121 early childhood education, alleviating one of the greatest barriers
2222 to a woman and her children leaving an abusive situation; and
2323 WHEREAS, Financed through public and private donations, the
2424 $5 million project is located on property donated by the City of San
2525 Marcos and supplements the existing HCWC shelter for short-term
2626 emergency situations; moreover, the complex was made possible with
2727 the support of the Austin chapter of HomeAid, a national nonprofit
2828 that assists organizations that help fight homelessness; and
2929 WHEREAS, By providing victims of domestic violence with a
3030 safe place to live, the Marla R. Johnson Housing Center empowers
3131 those it serves to build a brighter future for themselves and their
3232 families, and in so doing, it contributes immeasurably to the
3333 strength of the community; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3535 Legislature hereby commemorate the opening of the Marla R. Johnson
3636 Housing Center and commend all those involved in bringing the
3737 project to fruition; and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3939 prepared for the Marla R. Johnson Housing Center as an expression of
4040 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
