5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |

6 | 6 | | a close with the passing of U.S. Army Colonel (Ret.) Manuel Lopez on |
---|
7 | 7 | | August 3, 2022, at the age of 84; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Rufino and Elvira Lopez, Manuel Lopez was |
---|
9 | 9 | | born in San Diego, Texas, on January 1, 1938, and he was a member of |
---|
10 | 10 | | the Class of 1956 at the Texas Military Institute; after attending |
---|
11 | 11 | | Texas A&M University, he earned a political science degree from |
---|
12 | 12 | | Park University; he also graduated from the Command and General |
---|
13 | 13 | | Staff College and was a faculty member there; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1957, Mr. Lopez enlisted in the U.S. Army, first |
---|
15 | 15 | | serving as a sergeant with the 69th Armor Regiment in Germany before |
---|
16 | 16 | | commanding a missile battery at Fort Carson; next, he commanded the |
---|
17 | 17 | | Headquarters Battery of the 2nd Target Acquisition Battalion in |
---|
18 | 18 | | Korea and served with the 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII |
---|
19 | 19 | | Airborne Corps Operations Staff at Fort Bragg; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lopez deployed to Vietnam in 1966 as an |
---|
21 | 21 | | airborne division battalion commander; subsequently, he rejoined |
---|
22 | 22 | | the XVIII Airborne Corps and was named airborne advisor for the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Argentine Army; in the 1970s, he went back to Korea as a fire |
---|
24 | 24 | | support coordinator, and in Texas, he became executive officer for |
---|
25 | 25 | | the 2nd Armored Division Artillery; he was later named chief of |
---|
26 | 26 | | staff of the Division Forward in Germany and then chief of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Military Assistance Group in Argentina; his final active duty |
---|
28 | 28 | | assignment was with the Arkansas National Guard; he concluded his |
---|
29 | 29 | | distinguished 30-year career at the rank of colonel; his awards |
---|
30 | 30 | | included the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious |
---|
31 | 31 | | Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Air Medal; |
---|
32 | 32 | | after retiring from the military, he worked as a corporate |
---|
33 | 33 | | marketing manager for the Hallmark Electronics Firm; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lopez shared a rewarding marriage with his wife, |
---|
35 | 35 | | the late Maria Rosario Lopez, and he took great pride in his 5 |
---|
36 | 36 | | children, Camilla, Corina, Alma, Manuel, and Ana, as well as his 16 |
---|
37 | 37 | | grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Manuel Lopez earned the lasting respect and |
---|
39 | 39 | | admiration of all who were privileged to know him, and he leaves |
---|
40 | 40 | | behind a legacy that his loved ones can remember with pride; now, |
---|
41 | 41 | | therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of U.S. Army Colonel |
---|
44 | 44 | | (Ret.) Manuel Lopez and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives |
---|
45 | 45 | | and friends; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

47 | 47 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

48 | 48 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Manuel |
