44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
66 a close with the passing of U.S. Army Colonel (Ret.) Manuel Lopez on
77 August 3, 2022, at the age of 84; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Rufino and Elvira Lopez, Manuel Lopez was
99 born in San Diego, Texas, on January 1, 1938, and he was a member of
1010 the Class of 1956 at the Texas Military Institute; after attending
1111 Texas A&M University, he earned a political science degree from
1212 Park University; he also graduated from the Command and General
1313 Staff College and was a faculty member there; and
1414 WHEREAS, In 1957, Mr. Lopez enlisted in the U.S. Army, first
1515 serving as a sergeant with the 69th Armor Regiment in Germany before
1616 commanding a missile battery at Fort Carson; next, he commanded the
1717 Headquarters Battery of the 2nd Target Acquisition Battalion in
1818 Korea and served with the 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII
1919 Airborne Corps Operations Staff at Fort Bragg; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Lopez deployed to Vietnam in 1966 as an
2121 airborne division battalion commander; subsequently, he rejoined
2222 the XVIII Airborne Corps and was named airborne advisor for the
2323 Argentine Army; in the 1970s, he went back to Korea as a fire
2424 support coordinator, and in Texas, he became executive officer for
2525 the 2nd Armored Division Artillery; he was later named chief of
2626 staff of the Division Forward in Germany and then chief of the
2727 Military Assistance Group in Argentina; his final active duty
2828 assignment was with the Arkansas National Guard; he concluded his
2929 distinguished 30-year career at the rank of colonel; his awards
3030 included the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious
3131 Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Air Medal;
3232 after retiring from the military, he worked as a corporate
3333 marketing manager for the Hallmark Electronics Firm; and
3434 WHEREAS, Mr. Lopez shared a rewarding marriage with his wife,
3535 the late Maria Rosario Lopez, and he took great pride in his 5
3636 children, Camilla, Corina, Alma, Manuel, and Ana, as well as his 16
3737 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and
3838 WHEREAS, Manuel Lopez earned the lasting respect and
3939 admiration of all who were privileged to know him, and he leaves
4040 behind a legacy that his loved ones can remember with pride; now,
4141 therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4343 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of U.S. Army Colonel
4444 (Ret.) Manuel Lopez and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives
4545 and friends; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4747 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4848 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Manuel
4949 Lopez.
