55 WHEREAS, April 2, 2023, marks the celebration of Palm Sunday,
66 the first day of the Christian Holy Week; and
77 WHEREAS, Palm Sunday, which falls on the last Sunday in Lent
88 and the Sunday before Easter, commemorates the triumphant return of
99 Jesus Christ to Jerusalem; according to the scriptures, Jesus rode
1010 into the city on a donkey and was greeted by a crowd of followers,
1111 who laid their coats and palm branches on the ground to symbolically
1212 recognize him as their king and messiah; and
1313 WHEREAS, In many churches, the day is celebrated with the
1414 blessing and procession of palms, a ceremony that dates back to the
1515 end of the fourth century in Jerusalem; also called Passion Sunday,
1616 the holiday frequently features an account of the Passion of
1717 Christ; some traditions also include using the palms as
1818 sacramentals and burning them to serve as the ashes for the next
1919 year's Ash Wednesday celebration; and
2020 WHEREAS, Observed for more than 1,600 years, Palm Sunday
2121 commences the most sacred week in the Christian calendar and
2222 heralds the coming of Easter, and it is a pleasure to recognize all
2323 those across the Lone Star State who are celebrating this special
2424 holiday; now, therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
2626 Legislature hereby commemorate Palm Sunday 2023.
