5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, April 2, 2023, marks the celebration of Palm Sunday, |

6 | 6 | | the first day of the Christian Holy Week; and |

7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Palm Sunday, which falls on the last Sunday in Lent |

8 | 8 | | and the Sunday before Easter, commemorates the triumphant return of |

9 | 9 | | Jesus Christ to Jerusalem; according to the scriptures, Jesus rode |
---|
10 | 10 | | into the city on a donkey and was greeted by a crowd of followers, |

11 | 11 | | who laid their coats and palm branches on the ground to symbolically |
---|
12 | 12 | | recognize him as their king and messiah; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In many churches, the day is celebrated with the |
---|
14 | 14 | | blessing and procession of palms, a ceremony that dates back to the |
---|
15 | 15 | | end of the fourth century in Jerusalem; also called Passion Sunday, |
---|
16 | 16 | | the holiday frequently features an account of the Passion of |
---|
17 | 17 | | Christ; some traditions also include using the palms as |
---|
18 | 18 | | sacramentals and burning them to serve as the ashes for the next |
---|
19 | 19 | | year's Ash Wednesday celebration; and |

20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Observed for more than 1,600 years, Palm Sunday |

22 | 22 | | heralds the coming of Easter, and it is a pleasure to recognize all |
