| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Rice University alumna Germaine Franco has reached a |

| 6 | 6 | | new milestone in her career by winning the 2023 Grammy Award for |

| 7 | 7 | | Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Franco received this prestigious accolade for |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | her work as the composer for the Disney film Encanto, which also |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | garnered her a nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Original |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Score category, a first for a Latina; in addition to composing, she |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | provided keyboard and both Latin and orchestral percussion on the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | film's score; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Franco studied percussion at Rice University's |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Shepherd School of Music, earning a bachelor's degree in 1984 and a |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | master's in 1987; the following year, she moved to Los Angeles, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | where she has established a successful career as a composer, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | songwriter, and orchestrator; she has performed with a number of |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | major international orchestras and artists and worked on media |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | projects ranging from studio blockbusters and television series to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | documentaries and immersive attractions; moreover, she became the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | first woman to score a Disney film with her work on Coco, and she was |

| 23 | 23 | | the first Latina invited to join the music branch of the Academy of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; a Sundance Film Music and Sound |

| 25 | 25 | | Design Lab Fellow, she has received a Shirley Walker Award from the |

| 26 | 26 | | American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and has been |

| 27 | 27 | | featured in the film Women Who Score; and |

| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Through her skill as a musician and composer, |

| 30 | 30 | | industry, and she is indeed deserving of this most recent honor; |
