5	5	WHEREAS, Dr. Huda Zoghbi was awarded the 2022 Kavli Prize in
6	6	Neuroscience by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters; and
7	7	WHEREAS, The Kavli Prize honors scientists for breakthroughs
8	8	in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience, and neuroscience, and
9	9	Dr. Zoghbi and her co-recipients were awarded the 2022 Kavli Prize
10	10	in Neuroscience for pioneering the discovery of genes underlying a
11	11	range of serious brain disorders and developing strategies for
12	12	diagnosis and treatment; and
13	13	WHEREAS, A world-renowned clinician-scientist, Dr. Zoghbi
14	14	received the award for her independent work identifying the
15	15	mutations in the MECP2 gene that cause Rett syndrome, which
16	16	develops in young girls and results in devastating motor and
17	17	cognitive symptoms; the award also recognizes her collaboration
18	18	with fellow award recipient Harry T. Orr on their work discovering
19	19	ATAXIN1, the gene underlying the neurodegenerative disease
20	20	spinocerebellar ataxia type 1; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Dr. Zoghbi is a professor of pediatrics, neurology,
22	22	neuroscience, and molecular and human genetics at Baylor College of
23	23	Medicine; she also serves as the founding director of the Jan and
24	24	Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's
25	25	Hospital and as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator;
26	26	moreover, she is a trustee emerita at Rice University and an elected
27	27	member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy
28	28	of Inventors; she has received numerous honors for her myriad
29	29	achievements, including the Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Research,
30	30	the Gruber Prize in Neuroscience, the Breakthrough Prize in Life
31	31	Sciences, and the Brain Prize; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Born in Lebanon, Dr. Zoghbi attended the American
33	33	University of Beirut; she moved to the United States after the
34	34	Lebanese Civil War broke out to continue medical school, and in
35	35	1979, she graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville; she
36	36	went on to complete her training in pediatric neurology and receive
37	37	a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular genetics at Baylor College
38	38	of Medicine in Houston; and
39	39	WHEREAS, The groundbreaking contributions of Dr. Huda Zoghbi
40	40	have placed her at the forefront of the field of neuroscience, and
41	41	her efforts are inspiring other scientists in the Lone Star State
42	42	and beyond; now, therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
44	44	Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Huda Zoghbi on her receipt of
45	45	the 2022 Kavli Prize in Neuroscience and extend to her sincere best
46	46	wishes for continued success in her important work; and, be it
47	47	further
48	48	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
49	49	prepared for Dr. Zoghbi as an expression of high regard by the Texas
50	50	House of Representatives.
