5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, On February 11, 2023, the City of Terrell is marking |
---|
6 | 6 | | the 150th anniversary of its founding; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The city is named for a friend of Sam Houston and |
---|
8 | 8 | | surveyor of the Republic of Texas, Robert A. Terrell, who settled |
---|
9 | 9 | | in the area in 1847; decades later, the advent of the Texas and |
---|
10 | 10 | | Pacific Railway promised opportunities for growth and prosperity; |
---|
11 | 11 | | in order to bring a depot to town, two Kaufman County entrepreneurs, |
---|
12 | 12 | | Charles Cornelius "C. C." Nash and John G. Moore, deeded a large |
---|
13 | 13 | | tract of land to the railway on February 11, 1873; the Terrell |
---|
14 | 14 | | family and former Kaufman County judge W. D. Irvine also donated |
---|
15 | 15 | | land for the project; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, By the mid-1880s, the population numbered about |
---|
17 | 17 | | 3,000, supporting numerous businesses, three weekly newspapers, |
---|
18 | 18 | | and nine churches; impressed by the advocacy of local leaders, as |
---|
19 | 19 | | well as favorable terms offered by a civic-minded landowner, the |
---|
20 | 20 | | state chose a site in the city for its second mental health |
---|
21 | 21 | | facility, now known as Terrell State Hospital; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Terrell residents recognized the importance of |
---|
23 | 23 | | education from the town's earliest days; the public school system |
---|
24 | 24 | | was in place by 1882, and a number of colleges have operated in the |
---|
25 | 25 | | community over the years; during World War II, more than 2,000 |
---|
26 | 26 | | British Royal Air Force cadets learned to fly at the No. 1 British |
---|
27 | 27 | | Flying Training School; today, Terrell hosts both Trinity Valley |
---|
28 | 28 | | Community College and a venerable HBCU, Southwestern Christian |
---|
29 | 29 | | College; on the SwCC campus stands the home built by |
---|
30 | 30 | | Robert A. Terrell, one of just 20 Round Houses left in the country; |
---|
31 | 31 | | noted alumni of Terrell High School include the late Randy Snow, the |
---|
32 | 32 | | first Paralympian inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame, and |
---|
33 | 33 | | actor, singer, and comedian Jamie Foxx; the Terrell Independent |
---|
34 | 34 | | School District's Jamie Foxx Performing Arts Center is named in |
---|
35 | 35 | | honor of the Oscar and Grammy Award-winning star; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating a rich and colorful history, the |
---|
37 | 37 | | citizens of Terrell may take justifiable pride in their vibrant |
---|
38 | 38 | | community as they mark this important milestone; now, therefore, be |
---|
39 | 39 | | it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the sesquicentennial of the City of |
---|
42 | 42 | | Terrell and extend to its residents sincere best wishes for the |
---|
43 | 43 | | future; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

45 | 45 | | prepared for the City of Terrell as an expression of high regard by |
