44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Members of the Alzheimer's Association are
66 gathering at the Texas Capitol on April 5, 2023, as part of
77 Alzheimer's Association State Advocacy Day; and
88 WHEREAS, A progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder,
99 Alzheimer's disease robs individuals of their memories and leads to
1010 progressive mental and physical impairments; it is the
1111 seventh-leading cause of death in the United States, and unlike the
1212 other principal causes, there is currently no cure or treatment for
1313 it and no way to slow its progression; in addition, Alzheimer's is
1414 the most expensive disease in the U.S., costing more than cancer and
1515 heart disease combined; and
1616 WHEREAS, Today, more than 6.7 million Americans are living
1717 with Alzheimer's, including 400,000 in Texas; these individuals
1818 require considerable assistance, and over 1 million Texans provide
1919 home care to family and friends with Alzheimer's, for a total of
2020 more than $23.5 billion in unpaid labor; according to the National
2121 Institute on Aging, Alzheimer's disease also indirectly costs
2222 businesses more than $37 billion a year in lost productivity as a
2323 result of employees missing work or leaving their job to care for a
2424 relative; and
2525 WHEREAS, With early detection and diagnosis, individuals
2626 with Alzheimer's and their families can better plan for the future
2727 while gaining access to medications, critical research trials, and
2828 support from the Alzheimer's Association; and
2929 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's Association State Advocacy Day provides
3030 an important opportunity to raise awareness about Alzheimer's
3131 disease, to honor caregivers who support and care for loved ones
3232 with the disease, and to acknowledge the work of researchers who are
3333 searching for a cause and a cure; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3535 Legislature hereby recognize April 5, 2023, as Alzheimer's
3636 Association State Advocacy Day at the State Capitol and commend the
3737 Alzheimer's Association for its efforts to fight this terrible
3838 disease and to advocate for those suffering from it.
