5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Alzheimer's Association are |
---|
6 | 6 | | gathering at the Texas Capitol on April 5, 2023, as part of |
---|
7 | 7 | | Alzheimer's Association State Advocacy Day; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, |
---|
9 | 9 | | Alzheimer's disease robs individuals of their memories and leads to |
---|
10 | 10 | | progressive mental and physical impairments; it is the |
---|
11 | 11 | | seventh-leading cause of death in the United States, and unlike the |
---|
12 | 12 | | other principal causes, there is currently no cure or treatment for |
---|
13 | 13 | | it and no way to slow its progression; in addition, Alzheimer's is |
---|
14 | 14 | | the most expensive disease in the U.S., costing more than cancer and |
---|
15 | 15 | | heart disease combined; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Today, more than 6.7 million Americans are living |
---|
17 | 17 | | with Alzheimer's, including 400,000 in Texas; these individuals |
---|
18 | 18 | | require considerable assistance, and over 1 million Texans provide |
---|
19 | 19 | | home care to family and friends with Alzheimer's, for a total of |
---|
20 | 20 | | more than $23.5 billion in unpaid labor; according to the National |
---|
21 | 21 | | Institute on Aging, Alzheimer's disease also indirectly costs |
---|
22 | 22 | | businesses more than $37 billion a year in lost productivity as a |
---|
23 | 23 | | result of employees missing work or leaving their job to care for a |
---|
24 | 24 | | relative; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, With early detection and diagnosis, individuals |
---|
26 | 26 | | with Alzheimer's and their families can better plan for the future |
---|
27 | 27 | | while gaining access to medications, critical research trials, and |
---|
28 | 28 | | support from the Alzheimer's Association; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's Association State Advocacy Day provides |
---|
30 | 30 | | an important opportunity to raise awareness about Alzheimer's |
---|
31 | 31 | | disease, to honor caregivers who support and care for loved ones |
---|
32 | 32 | | with the disease, and to acknowledge the work of researchers who are |
---|
33 | 33 | | searching for a cause and a cure; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 5, 2023, as Alzheimer's |
---|
36 | 36 | | Association State Advocacy Day at the State Capitol and commend the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Alzheimer's Association for its efforts to fight this terrible |
---|
38 | 38 | | disease and to advocate for those suffering from it. |
