5	5	WHEREAS, Citizens and business leaders of Montgomery County
6	6	are gathering in Austin on February 14, 2023, to celebrate
7	7	Montgomery County Day at the State Capitol; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Situated at the southern edge of the Piney Woods of
9	9	East Texas, Montgomery County was established by the Congress of
10	10	the Republic of Texas in 1837; the historic city of Montgomery is
11	11	recognized as the birthplace of the Texas flag, because the design
12	12	presented by Montgomery resident Dr. Charles B. Stewart was adopted
13	13	by the Texas Congress in 1839 and has remained the banner of the
14	14	state since it joined the Union in 1845; and
15	15	WHEREAS, The arrival of the railroads in the 1870s and 1880s
16	16	sparked a lumber boom that revived Montgomery County's agricultural
17	17	economy after the Civil War; Houston lumberman Isaac Conroe
18	18	established a sawmill in 1881, and the town of Conroe that grew up
19	19	around the mill was named the county seat eight years later; in
20	20	1931, the discovery of oil triggered yet another financial upsurge
21	21	in the area, and today, oil production, the lumber industry, and
22	22	ranching further the area's prosperity; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Visitors from across the state are drawn to the
24	24	region's vibrant historical and cultural establishments, and
25	25	outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the recreational opportunities at Sam
26	26	Houston National Forest, W. Goodrich Jones State Forest, and Lake
27	27	Conroe Park; Conroe, one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas,
28	28	has been designated as a Music Friendly Community by the Texas Music
29	29	Office; additionally, The Woodlands, a master-planned community,
30	30	is home to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, a major concert
31	31	venue that serves as the summer residence of the Houston Symphony
32	32	and that ranked second in ticket sales among amphitheaters
33	33	worldwide in 2019; in recent years, East Montgomery County has
34	34	experienced significant residential and commercial growth, with
35	35	the area's residents benefiting from proximity to the cultural
36	36	amenities of Houston and The Woodlands as well as from access to
37	37	Lake Houston Wilderness Park and three regional lakes; and
38	38	WHEREAS, This visit to the State Capitol was organized by the
39	39	Conroe/Lake Conroe, Woodlands Area, Greater Magnolia Parkway,
40	40	Greater East Montgomery County, Montgomery Area, and Montgomery
41	41	County Hispanic Chambers of Commerce; members of each association
42	42	work to improve and strengthen economic development and the quality
43	43	of life throughout Montgomery County, which is one of the
44	44	fastest-growing counties in the nation; and
45	45	WHEREAS, The people of this vibrant county take great pride
46	46	in their rich history as they work to build an even brighter future,
47	47	and it is indeed fitting to honor them and their unique
48	48	contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
49	49	be it
50	50	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
51	51	Legislature hereby recognize February 14, 2023, as Montgomery
52	52	County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
53	53	delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay
54	54	in Austin.
