5	5	WHEREAS, Proud members of Feeding Texas are gathering in
6	6	Austin to celebrate Texas Food Bank Day at the State Capitol on
7	7	April 13, 2023; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Established in 1986, the Feeding Texas network
9	9	consists of 21 food banks that work through more than 4,000
10	10	community agencies to reduce hunger and improve health in all 254
11	11	Texas counties; and
12	12	WHEREAS, To further these goals, the network has fostered
13	13	many public-private partnerships, including the Texans Feeding
14	14	Texans Surplus Agricultural Products Grant Program, which helps
15	15	provide food to low-income families by offering incentives to
16	16	growers to donate fresh produce that would otherwise be left in the
17	17	field; this initiative offsets the costs of harvesting, packaging,
18	18	and transportation and has resulted in the distribution of 350
19	19	million pounds of surplus produce across the state; and
20	20	WHEREAS, Members of Feeding Texas have also established a
21	21	partnership with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to
22	22	improve the diets of low-income Texans by offering nutrition
23	23	education and disease prevention services; and
24	24	WHEREAS, By leveraging their expertise and experience,
25	25	members of Feeding Texas respond to families in need swiftly and
26	26	effectively when crisis strikes; Texas food banks delivered one
27	27	billion pounds of food during the first year of the COVID-19
28	28	pandemic; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Network members have partnered with the Texas Health
30	30	and Human Services Commission to provide client education and
31	31	application assistance for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance
32	32	Program, greatly increasing the efficiency of the
33	33	eligibility-determination process; and
34	34	WHEREAS, By facilitating the distribution of surplus food,
35	35	responding to disaster, raising awareness about good dietary
36	36	practices, and helping to prevent diet-related disease, Feeding
37	37	Texas is reducing hunger and contributing greatly to the health and
38	38	well-being of the people of Texas; now, therefore, be it
39	39	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
40	40	Legislature hereby recognize April 13, 2023, as Texas Food Bank Day
41	41	at the State Capitol and extend to the staff and volunteers of
42	42	Feeding Texas sincere best wishes for continued success in their
43	43	important work; and, be it further
44	44	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
45	45	prepared for Feeding Texas as an expression of high regard by the
46	46	Texas House of Representatives.
