5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Richardson is |

6 | 6 | | presenting candidate forums on April 17 and 20, 2023, in advance of |
---|
7 | 7 | | the May 6 general election; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The organization is partnering with the Richardson |
---|
9 | 9 | | Independent School District on April 17 for a public discussion |
---|
10 | 10 | | among candidates for two contested school board races; the group is |
---|
11 | 11 | | coordinating with the City of Richardson to host its April 20 event, |
---|
12 | 12 | | which will provide an opportunity to hear from candidates for the |
---|
13 | 13 | | mayoral seat and three of six city council seats; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters was formed in 1920 with |
---|
15 | 15 | | the merger of the National Council of Women Voters and the National |
---|
16 | 16 | | American Women's Suffrage Association; its initial aim was to |
---|
17 | 17 | | assist newly enfranchised women seeking to exercise their right to |
---|
18 | 18 | | vote; as a nonpartisan, grassroots organization, it strives to |
---|
19 | 19 | | empower citizens of all backgrounds to participate in the political |
---|
20 | 20 | | sphere, and it has widened its vision to foster a more inclusive |
---|
21 | 21 | | democracy in which all Americans can see themselves represented in |
---|
22 | 22 | | our government; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Chartered in 1962, the Richardson chapter works |
---|
24 | 24 | | tirelessly to provide election information to voters through |
---|
25 | 25 | | nonpartisan voters guides as well as candidate forums; it also |
---|
26 | 26 | | conducts voter registration drives and produces a local Guide to |
---|
27 | 27 | | Elected Officials; in addition, it studies public policy issues, |
---|
28 | 28 | | such as land use, education, public health services, and the local |
---|
29 | 29 | | city charter, and develops a consensus; it has championed many |
---|
30 | 30 | | reforms over the years, from unified polling places and televised |
---|
31 | 31 | | city council meetings to better regulation of child care |
---|
32 | 32 | | facilities, expansion of city parks, and inclusion in the Dallas |
---|
33 | 33 | | Area Rapid Transit Rail System; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, An informed citizenry is vital to the continued |
---|
35 | 35 | | strength of our democracy, and for more than six decades, the League |
---|
36 | 36 | | of Women Voters of Richardson has helped area residents gain the |
---|
37 | 37 | | knowledge and insight required to participate more meaningfully in |
---|
38 | 38 | | our electoral process; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby honor the League of Women Voters of Richardson |
---|
41 | 41 | | on the occasion of its April 2023 candidate forums and extend to its |
---|
42 | 42 | | members sincere best wishes for continued success in their |
---|
43 | 43 | | important endeavors; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

45 | 45 | | prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the |
