44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Richardson is
66 presenting candidate forums on April 17 and 20, 2023, in advance of
77 the May 6 general election; and
88 WHEREAS, The organization is partnering with the Richardson
99 Independent School District on April 17 for a public discussion
1010 among candidates for two contested school board races; the group is
1111 coordinating with the City of Richardson to host its April 20 event,
1212 which will provide an opportunity to hear from candidates for the
1313 mayoral seat and three of six city council seats; and
1414 WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters was formed in 1920 with
1515 the merger of the National Council of Women Voters and the National
1616 American Women's Suffrage Association; its initial aim was to
1717 assist newly enfranchised women seeking to exercise their right to
1818 vote; as a nonpartisan, grassroots organization, it strives to
1919 empower citizens of all backgrounds to participate in the political
2020 sphere, and it has widened its vision to foster a more inclusive
2121 democracy in which all Americans can see themselves represented in
2222 our government; and
2323 WHEREAS, Chartered in 1962, the Richardson chapter works
2424 tirelessly to provide election information to voters through
2525 nonpartisan voters guides as well as candidate forums; it also
2626 conducts voter registration drives and produces a local Guide to
2727 Elected Officials; in addition, it studies public policy issues,
2828 such as land use, education, public health services, and the local
2929 city charter, and develops a consensus; it has championed many
3030 reforms over the years, from unified polling places and televised
3131 city council meetings to better regulation of child care
3232 facilities, expansion of city parks, and inclusion in the Dallas
3333 Area Rapid Transit Rail System; and
3434 WHEREAS, An informed citizenry is vital to the continued
3535 strength of our democracy, and for more than six decades, the League
3636 of Women Voters of Richardson has helped area residents gain the
3737 knowledge and insight required to participate more meaningfully in
3838 our electoral process; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby honor the League of Women Voters of Richardson
4141 on the occasion of its April 2023 candidate forums and extend to its
4242 members sincere best wishes for continued success in their
4343 important endeavors; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
4646 Texas House of Representatives.
