5	5	WHEREAS, Delivering a performance for the ages, Patrick
6	6	Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in the 2023 Super
7	7	Bowl, claiming the second championship ring of his NFL career; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Kansas City battled the Philadelphia Eagles for the
9	9	NFL title on February 12 in Glendale, Arizona; nursing a high ankle
10	10	sprain he sustained earlier in the playoffs, Mr. Mahomes reinjured
11	11	the same ankle in the second quarter and limped off the field,
12	12	carrying the Chiefs' hopes with him to the sideline bench; in the
13	13	second half, however, this determined athlete returned to the game
14	14	and orchestrated a signature comeback; the Chiefs erased a 10-point
15	15	deficit and secured a 38-35 win in the closing seconds of the game;
16	16	in recognition of his accomplishment, he was presented with his
17	17	second Super Bowl MVP award; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Born in Tyler, Mr. Mahomes excelled in both baseball
19	19	and football at Whitehouse High School and threw for 4,600 yards and
20	20	50 touchdowns on the gridiron as a senior; he subsequently was
21	21	selected by the Detroit Tigers in the Major League Baseball Draft,
22	22	but he instead enrolled at Texas Tech University, joining the
23	23	baseball team and then switching full-time to football after
24	24	earning the starting quarterback job for the Red Raiders during his
25	25	sophomore season; and
26	26	WHEREAS, In 2017, Kansas City made Mr. Mahomes the 10th
27	27	overall choice in the NFL Draft; gaining widespread acclaim in his
28	28	second year, he became only the second NFL quarterback to throw for
29	29	50 touchdowns and more than 5,000 yards in a single season, and he
30	30	was named the league MVP for 2018; demonstrating exemplary
31	31	leadership and playmaking ability, he has guided the Chiefs to five
32	32	consecutive AFC Championship Games and three of the last four Super
33	33	Bowls; he collected his first championship victory and Super Bowl
34	34	MVP honor in 2020 after his team bested San Francisco, and Kansas
35	35	City played for the title again in 2021; and
36	36	WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Mahomes enjoys the love
37	37	and support of his wife, Brittany Matthews Mahomes; they are the
38	38	proud parents of two children, Sterling Skye Mahomes and Patrick
39	39	"Bronze" Lavon Mahomes III; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Over the course of six NFL seasons, Patrick Mahomes
41	41	has emerged as one of the game's premier signal callers, earning the
42	42	admiration of fellow players and countless fans across the nation,
43	43	and it is indeed a pleasure to join in recognizing him for his
44	44	exceptional achievements; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
46	46	Legislature hereby congratulate Patrick Mahomes for leading the
47	47	Kansas City Chiefs to the 2023 Super Bowl championship and extend to
48	48	him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for Mr. Mahomes as an expression of high regard by the
51	51	Texas House of Representatives.
