5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Esteemed jurist Jack Humphrey Holland of Brownsboro |

6 | 6 | | passed away on June 10, 2022, at the age of 92, bringing a great loss |
---|
7 | 7 | | to his family and friends; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Richard Frazer Holland and Rena Trueheart |
---|
9 | 9 | | Lewis Holland, Jack Holland was born in Athens, Texas, on June 8, |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1930; he grew up with six siblings, Richard, Ben, Jerry, Emma Jo, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Mary Ruth, and Jane Ann, and served his country in the United States |
---|
12 | 12 | | Air Force; after attending the University of North Texas and |
---|
13 | 13 | | Harvard University, he completed his law degree at The University |
---|
14 | 14 | | of Texas; he worked as an assistant trust officer before returning |
---|
15 | 15 | | to his hometown to practice law and serve as county attorney; in |
---|
16 | 16 | | 1969, he was appointed district judge of the newly created 173rd |
---|
17 | 17 | | District Court, and he went on to serve in that capacity for more |
---|
18 | 18 | | than 35 years, the second-longest tenure of any district court |
---|
19 | 19 | | judge in the state; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Following his retirement in 2005, Judge Holland |
---|
21 | 21 | | continued to benefit his fellow citizens as city attorney for the |
---|
22 | 22 | | City of Athens and municipal judge for Gun Barrel City; he also |
---|
23 | 23 | | maintained a private practice, and he was recognized for his |
---|
24 | 24 | | extensive efforts in behalf of pro bono clients; active in such |
---|
25 | 25 | | community organizations as Athens Masonic Lodge No. 165 and the |
---|
26 | 26 | | Rotary Club of Athens, he was a founding member of Athens Chapter |
---|
27 | 27 | | No. 54 of the Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; |
---|
28 | 28 | | moreover, he was a longtime member of the First United Methodist |
---|
29 | 29 | | Church and belonged to United Methodist Men; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Judge Holland was the proud father of a son, Joseph; |
---|
31 | 31 | | preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Holland, he was fortunate |
---|
32 | 32 | | to find love a second time with Minnie Louetta Holland; with their |
---|
33 | 33 | | marriage, he gained two stepsons, Todd and Chad Wright, and a |
---|
34 | 34 | | stepdaughter, Shannon Wright, as well as 10 step-grandchildren and |
---|
35 | 35 | | 4 step-great-grandchildren; his gracious, soft-spoken ways and |
---|
36 | 36 | | great kindness brought him many friendships; known for his love of |
---|
37 | 37 | | dancing, he was especially happy two-stepping to Bob Wills's "Faded |
---|
38 | 38 | | Love"; he also enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and fishing; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Although Jack Holland is deeply missed by those he |
---|
40 | 40 | | left behind, his legacy of service will be remembered and admired |
---|
41 | 41 | | for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Jack |
---|
44 | 44 | | Humphrey Holland and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his |
---|
45 | 45 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
47 | 47 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

48 | 48 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jack |
