44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Esteemed jurist Jack Humphrey Holland of Brownsboro
66 passed away on June 10, 2022, at the age of 92, bringing a great loss
77 to his family and friends; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Richard Frazer Holland and Rena Trueheart
99 Lewis Holland, Jack Holland was born in Athens, Texas, on June 8,
1010 1930; he grew up with six siblings, Richard, Ben, Jerry, Emma Jo,
1111 Mary Ruth, and Jane Ann, and served his country in the United States
1212 Air Force; after attending the University of North Texas and
1313 Harvard University, he completed his law degree at The University
1414 of Texas; he worked as an assistant trust officer before returning
1515 to his hometown to practice law and serve as county attorney; in
1616 1969, he was appointed district judge of the newly created 173rd
1717 District Court, and he went on to serve in that capacity for more
1818 than 35 years, the second-longest tenure of any district court
1919 judge in the state; and
2020 WHEREAS, Following his retirement in 2005, Judge Holland
2121 continued to benefit his fellow citizens as city attorney for the
2222 City of Athens and municipal judge for Gun Barrel City; he also
2323 maintained a private practice, and he was recognized for his
2424 extensive efforts in behalf of pro bono clients; active in such
2525 community organizations as Athens Masonic Lodge No. 165 and the
2626 Rotary Club of Athens, he was a founding member of Athens Chapter
2727 No. 54 of the Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution;
2828 moreover, he was a longtime member of the First United Methodist
2929 Church and belonged to United Methodist Men; and
3030 WHEREAS, Judge Holland was the proud father of a son, Joseph;
3131 preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Holland, he was fortunate
3232 to find love a second time with Minnie Louetta Holland; with their
3333 marriage, he gained two stepsons, Todd and Chad Wright, and a
3434 stepdaughter, Shannon Wright, as well as 10 step-grandchildren and
3535 4 step-great-grandchildren; his gracious, soft-spoken ways and
3636 great kindness brought him many friendships; known for his love of
3737 dancing, he was especially happy two-stepping to Bob Wills's "Faded
3838 Love"; he also enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and fishing; and
3939 WHEREAS, Although Jack Holland is deeply missed by those he
4040 left behind, his legacy of service will be remembered and admired
4141 for years to come; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4343 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Jack
4444 Humphrey Holland and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his
4545 passing; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4747 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4848 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jack
4949 Holland.
