5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Evelyn Tang, an assistant professor of physics |

6 | 6 | | and astronomy at Rice University, is the recipient of a 2022 CAREER |

7 | 7 | | Award from the Faculty Early Career Development Program of the |

8 | 8 | | National Science Foundation; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Among the most prestigious honors conferred by NSF, |
---|
10 | 10 | | CAREER Awards include five-year grants to support early-career |
---|
11 | 11 | | faculty who exemplify the highest ideals of their profession and |
---|
12 | 12 | | who work to advance their organization's mission; each year, NSF |
---|
13 | 13 | | presents only about 500 awards across all disciplines; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Tang was selected to receive a five-year award |
---|
15 | 15 | | of $650,000 for her research investigating topological invariants |
---|
16 | 16 | | and how they apply to biological systems, as well as synthetic |
---|
17 | 17 | | materials that mimic them, to better understand how and why life is |
---|
18 | 18 | | so robust; and |

19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, A member of the Center for Theoretical Biological |
---|
20 | 20 | | Physics at Rice, Dr. Tang joined the university's faculty in 2021; |
---|
21 | 21 | | she holds a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a master's |
---|
22 | 22 | | degree from the University of Cambridge, and she received her |
---|
23 | 23 | | doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; |
---|
24 | 24 | | previously, she was a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for |
---|
25 | 25 | | Dynamics and Self-Organization as well as a postdoctoral fellow at |
---|
26 | 26 | | the University of Pennsylvania; she is the recipient of a Scialog |
---|
27 | 27 | | award, a Simons-Berkeley Research Fellowship, and a Gates Cambridge |

28 | 28 | | scholarship; and |

29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Through her outstanding work at Rice University, |

30 | 30 | | Evelyn Tang has distinguished herself as an inspiring leader and an |

31 | 31 | | innovative researcher, and she may reflect with pride on this |

32 | 32 | | well-deserved recognition; now, therefore, be it |

33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Evelyn Tang on receiving a 2022 |
