44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Dr. Evelyn Tang, an assistant professor of physics
66 and astronomy at Rice University, is the recipient of a 2022 CAREER
77 Award from the Faculty Early Career Development Program of the
88 National Science Foundation; and
99 WHEREAS, Among the most prestigious honors conferred by NSF,
1010 CAREER Awards include five-year grants to support early-career
1111 faculty who exemplify the highest ideals of their profession and
1212 who work to advance their organization's mission; each year, NSF
1313 presents only about 500 awards across all disciplines; and
1414 WHEREAS, Dr. Tang was selected to receive a five-year award
1515 of $650,000 for her research investigating topological invariants
1616 and how they apply to biological systems, as well as synthetic
1717 materials that mimic them, to better understand how and why life is
1818 so robust; and
1919 WHEREAS, A member of the Center for Theoretical Biological
2020 Physics at Rice, Dr. Tang joined the university's faculty in 2021;
2121 she holds a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a master's
2222 degree from the University of Cambridge, and she received her
2323 doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology;
2424 previously, she was a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for
2525 Dynamics and Self-Organization as well as a postdoctoral fellow at
2626 the University of Pennsylvania; she is the recipient of a Scialog
2727 award, a Simons-Berkeley Research Fellowship, and a Gates Cambridge
2828 scholarship; and
2929 WHEREAS, Through her outstanding work at Rice University,
3030 Evelyn Tang has distinguished herself as an inspiring leader and an
3131 innovative researcher, and she may reflect with pride on this
3232 well-deserved recognition; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3434 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Evelyn Tang on receiving a 2022
3535 CAREER Award from the Faculty Early Career Development Program of
3636 the National Science Foundation and extend to her sincere best
3737 wishes for continued success in her important work; and, be it
3838 further
3939 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4040 prepared for Dr. Tang as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4141 House of Representatives.
