55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the inclusion of a mental health course in the required
88 curriculum for public high school students.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
1111 adding Subsection (c-4) to read as follows:
1212 (c-4) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules
1313 requiring students to complete at least one mental health course
1414 while in high school that satisfies the requirements of Subsection
1515 (a)(2)(B)(ii) and includes:
1616 (1) instruction regarding:
1717 (A) depression;
1818 (B) anxiety;
1919 (C) eating disorders;
2020 (D) schizophrenia; and
2121 (E) other mental health disorders; and
2222 (2) information about cultivating coping skills and
2323 seeking available mental health services.
2424 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2024-2025
2525 school year.
2626 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2727 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2828 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2929 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3030 Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
