7 | 7 | | relating to the inclusion of a mental health course in the required |

8 | 8 | | curriculum for public high school students. |

9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
---|
11 | 11 | | adding Subsection (c-4) to read as follows: |
---|
12 | 12 | | (c-4) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules |
---|
13 | 13 | | requiring students to complete at least one mental health course |
---|
14 | 14 | | while in high school that satisfies the requirements of Subsection |
---|
15 | 15 | | (a)(2)(B)(ii) and includes: |
---|
16 | 16 | | (1) instruction regarding: |
---|
17 | 17 | | (A) depression; |
---|
18 | 18 | | (B) anxiety; |
---|
19 | 19 | | (C) eating disorders; |
---|
20 | 20 | | (D) schizophrenia; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | (E) other mental health disorders; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | (2) information about cultivating coping skills and |
---|
23 | 23 | | seeking available mental health services. |
---|
24 | 24 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2024-2025 |
---|
25 | 25 | | school year. |
---|
26 | 26 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
---|
27 | 27 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
---|
28 | 28 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
---|
29 | 29 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
---|
30 | 30 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
