| 7 | 7 | | relating to training for peace officers on acquired and traumatic |

| 8 | 8 | | brain injuries and trauma-affected veterans. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 1701.253, Occupations Code, is amended |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | by adding Subsection (q) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (q) As part of the minimum curriculum requirements, the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | commission shall require an officer to complete the training |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | programs established under Sections 1701.264 and 1701.265. An |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | officer shall complete the programs not later than the last day of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the first full continuing education training period that begins on |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | or after the date the officer is licensed under this chapter unless |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the officer completes the programs as part of the officer's basic |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | training course. |

| 20 | 20 | | SECTION 2. Section 1701.264, Occupations Code, is amended |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | by adding Subsection (c) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (c) The commission by rule shall require an officer to |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | complete the training program established under this section unless |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the officer has completed the training under Section 1701.253(q) or |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | other training equivalent to the training program as determined by |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the commission. |

| 27 | 27 | | SECTION 3. Section 1701.265, Occupations Code, is amended |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | by adding Subsection (c) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (c) The commission by rule shall require an officer to |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | complete the training program established under this section unless |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the officer has completed the training under Section 1701.253(q) or |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | other training equivalent to the training program as determined by |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | the commission. |

| 34 | 34 | | SECTION 4. As soon as practicable after the effective date |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | of this Act, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement shall adopt |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | rules to implement Sections 1701.253(q), 1701.264(c), and |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | 1701.265(c), Occupations Code, as added by this Act. |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | SECTION 5. The minimum curriculum requirements under |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Section 1701.253(q), Occupations Code, as added by this Act, apply |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | only to an officer who first begins to satisfy those requirements on |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | or after January 1, 2024. |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | SECTION 6. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
