| 6 | 6 | | relating to the creation of a Texas history grant program. |

| 7 | 7 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 8 | 8 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 442, Government Code, is |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | amended by adding Section 442.0205 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Sec. 442.0205. TEXAS HISTORY AWARD AND GRANT PROGRAM. (a) |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | The commission shall create and administer a program for awarding |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | grants to nonprofit entities for the purpose of promoting |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | educational engagement with the history of this state. The grants |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | must be awarded annually to a nonprofit that: |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (1) hosts a statewide Texas history competition for |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | school-aged students; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (2) publishes works on Texas history by students or |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | faculty members. |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | (b) The commission shall establish procedures to administer |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the grant program, including procedures for applying for a grant |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | under this subsection. The commission shall enter into a contract |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | that includes performance requirements with each grant recipient. |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | The commission shall monitor and enforce the terms of the contract. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (c) In addition to funds appropriated for the purposes of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | this section, the commission may solicit gifts, grants, and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | donations from any public or private source for the purposes of this |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | section. |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | SECTION 2. The Texas Historical Commission shall establish |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the procedures for applying for a grant under Section 442.0205, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Government Code, as added by this Act, not later than October 1, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | 2023. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
