66 relating to the creation of a Texas history grant program.
77 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
88 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 442, Government Code, is
99 amended by adding Section 442.0205 to read as follows:
1010 Sec. 442.0205. TEXAS HISTORY AWARD AND GRANT PROGRAM. (a)
1111 The commission shall create and administer a program for awarding
1212 grants to nonprofit entities for the purpose of promoting
1313 educational engagement with the history of this state. The grants
1414 must be awarded annually to a nonprofit that:
1515 (1) hosts a statewide Texas history competition for
1616 school-aged students; and
1717 (2) publishes works on Texas history by students or
1818 faculty members.
1919 (b) The commission shall establish procedures to administer
2020 the grant program, including procedures for applying for a grant
2121 under this subsection. The commission shall enter into a contract
2222 that includes performance requirements with each grant recipient.
2323 The commission shall monitor and enforce the terms of the contract.
2424 (c) In addition to funds appropriated for the purposes of
2525 this section, the commission may solicit gifts, grants, and
2626 donations from any public or private source for the purposes of this
2727 section.
2828 SECTION 2. The Texas Historical Commission shall establish
2929 the procedures for applying for a grant under Section 442.0205,
3030 Government Code, as added by this Act, not later than October 1,
3131 2023.
3232 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3333 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3434 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3535 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3636 Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
