| 8 | 8 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 9 | 9 | SECTION 1. Section 511.021(a), Government Code, is amended | |
| 10 | 10 | to read as follows: | |
| 11 | 11 | (a) On the death of a prisoner in a county jail, other than a | |
| 12 | 12 | death from natural causes as determined by a physician during an | |
| 13 | 13 | autopsy or examination of the deceased prisoner, the commission | |
| 14 | 14 | shall appoint a law enforcement agency, other than the local law | |
| 15 | 15 | enforcement agency that operates the county jail, to investigate | |
| 16 | 16 | the death as soon as possible. Except as otherwise provided by | |
| 17 | 17 | Subsection (b), the appointed law enforcement agency shall conduct | |
| 18 | 18 | the investigation. | |
| 19 | 19 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
