| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 502.040(a), Transportation Code, is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (a) Not more than 30 days after purchasing a vehicle or |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | becoming a resident of this state, the owner of a motor vehicle, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | trailer, or semitrailer shall apply for the registration of the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | vehicle for: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (1) each registration year in which the vehicle is |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | used or to be used on a public highway; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (2) if the vehicle is unregistered for a registration |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | year that has begun and that applies to the vehicle and if the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | vehicle is used or to be used on a public highway, a [the remaining |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | portion of that] registration year designated by the department of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | 12 consecutive months to begin on the day of registration. |

| 23 | 23 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
