| 7 | 7 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 8 | 8 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter G, Chapter 504, Transportation Code, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | is amended by adding Section 504.680 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Sec. 504.680. SHERIFFS' ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS LICENSE PLATE. |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | (a) The department shall issue specialty license plates to honor |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the personnel of sheriff's offices. The license plates must |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | include: |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (1) the words "Support Your Sheriff's Office"; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (2) a depiction of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | logo. |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (b) After deduction of the department's administrative |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | costs, the remainder of the fee for issuance of the license plates |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | shall be deposited to the credit of an account created by the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | comptroller in the manner provided by Section 504.6012(b). Money |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | deposited to that account may be used only by the Texas Commission |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | on Law Enforcement to make grants to a nonprofit organization that |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | has a history of promoting the training, retention, and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | professionalism of sheriff's deputies, county jail employees, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | emergency service center employees, or other positions and offices |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | administered by a sheriff. |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (c) Section 504.702 does not apply to a specialty license |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | plate issued under this section. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
