6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Representatives and alumni from St. Edward's |

7 | 7 | | University in Austin are gathering at the State Capitol on |

8 | 8 | | February 9, 2023, to commemorate St. Edward's University Day; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, St. Edward's University is a private, liberal arts |
---|
10 | 10 | | institution founded in the Catholic and Holy Cross tradition, and |
---|
11 | 11 | | it currently serves approximately 3,600 students in over 55 |
---|
12 | 12 | | undergraduate and graduate degree programs; committed to providing |
---|
13 | 13 | | a highly personalized academic environment in which students can |
---|
14 | 14 | | deepen their knowledge with experiential learning, the university |
---|
15 | 15 | | has thrived as a diverse and highly collaborative community and has |
---|
16 | 16 | | excelled at producing well-rounded scholars as well as exceptional |
---|
17 | 17 | | leaders, innovators, and justice-minded thinkers who use their |
---|
18 | 18 | | talents to help shape the world for the better; for 20 consecutive |
---|
19 | 19 | | years, St. Edward's has been recognized as one of "America's Best |
---|
20 | 20 | | Colleges" by U.S.News & World Report, which has additionally |
---|
21 | 21 | | listed it among the 10 Best Regional Universities in the West for |
---|
22 | 22 | | four years in a row; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In 2021, St. Edward's named its first Hispanic |
---|
24 | 24 | | president, Dr. Montserrat Fuentes, to lead the institution; under |
---|
25 | 25 | | Dr. Fuentes's guidance, St. Edward's is advancing a bold and |
---|
26 | 26 | | visionary strategic plan focused on expanding academic programs to |
---|
27 | 27 | | meet local and statewide workforce needs, connecting graduates with |
---|
28 | 28 | | careers, investing in ways to give back to the community, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion; as a Hispanic Serving |
---|
30 | 30 | | Institution, St. Edward's takes pride in a student body that is |
---|
31 | 31 | | more than 50 percent Hispanic, and over a third of its students are |
---|
32 | 32 | | the first in their families to attend college; at 50 years of |
---|
33 | 33 | | service, its College Assistance Migrant Program has earned the |
---|
34 | 34 | | distinction of being the longest continuously running CAMP program |
---|
35 | 35 | | in the nation; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, St. Edward's graduates have |

37 | 37 | | embodied the university's mission by courageously taking risks and |
---|
38 | 38 | | confronting the critical issues facing our great state to bring |
---|
39 | 39 | | about positive change, and it is a privilege to honor this |
---|
40 | 40 | | outstanding institution; now, therefore, be it |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature |

42 | 42 | | hereby recognize February 9, 2023, as St. Edward's University Day |
---|
43 | 43 | | at the State Capitol and extend to all those associated with the |
---|
44 | 44 | | university sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it |
