66 WHEREAS, Proud residents of McMullen County are gathering in
77 Austin to celebrate McMullen County Day at the State Capitol on
88 February 8, 2023; and
99 WHEREAS, Located in the center of South Texas, McMullen
1010 County is made up of more than 1,000 square miles of flat and
1111 rolling brushland; artifacts discovered in the county indicate that
1212 human settlement dates back perhaps as far as 11,000 years, with
1313 groups of hunter-gatherers in the area until the 1700s; and
1414 WHEREAS, Several Spanish expeditions passed through the area
1515 in the 17th and 18th centuries, but the population was sparse until
1616 shortly before the Civil War, when settlers began to move in to take
1717 advantage of the grasslands where wild mustangs and cattle could be
1818 found; and
1919 WHEREAS, The county was established in 1858, and a group of
2020 resourceful adventurers settled where the Leoncita Creek flowed
2121 into the Rio Frio; the town was first called Rio Frio, then Dog
2222 Town, and finally Tilden, after Samuel J. (Whispering Sammy)
2323 Tilden, the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for president in
2424 1876; the town eventually became the county seat; and
2525 WHEREAS, Cattle and sheep ranching have dominated the
2626 county's economy, though oil and gas have grown in importance since
2727 the 1930s, and the region is also a destination for hunters; and
2828 WHEREAS, McMullen County residents are stewards of an area of
2929 fascinating history and culture, and their unique county merits
3030 special recognition; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
3232 hereby recognize February 8, 2023, as McMullen County Day at the
3333 State Capitol and extend best wishes to the visiting delegation for
3434 an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin.
