| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Representatives of the City of Laredo are gathering |

| 7 | 7 | | in Austin on February 8, 2023, to celebrate Laredo Legislative Day |

| 8 | 8 | | at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Laredo was established in 1755 by Don Tomás Sánchez, |

| 10 | 10 | | and its history offers a compelling tale, as the town was forged by |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Spaniards, Indians, Mexicans, Texans, and Americans; a dynamic |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | bilingual and bicultural community, this Texas city is proud of its |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Mexican roots; seven flags have flown over Laredo, and this unique |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | city celebrates its dual historical and cultural ties throughout |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the year; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Situated on the banks of the Rio Grande, Laredo is |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | now the 10th-largest city in Texas and the number one inland port on |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the southern United States border; in addition, it is one of the top |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | three ports of commerce in the nation, and in 2021, the city handled |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | almost 60 percent of all overland trade between Texas and Mexico; |

| 21 | 21 | | and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Laredo represents a strong economic driver for the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | United States, handling more than $240 billion in total trade by |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | value with the world and over five million commercial trucks |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | annually; through trade activity, the city has contributed more |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | than 474,000 direct and indirect jobs for the state of Texas, and in |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | 2022, it generated 2,563 jobs; Laredo is also home to multiple |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | institutes of higher learning, including Laredo College and Texas |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | A&M International University; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Boasting a rich history and a thriving trade |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | industry, Laredo has established itself as an outstanding community |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | in which to live and work, and its citizens may indeed take pride in |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | the place they call home; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature |

| 35 | 35 | | hereby recognize February 8, 2023, as Laredo Legislative Day at the |

| 36 | 36 | | State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best |

| 37 | 37 | | wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin. |
