6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Members of Habitat for Humanity Texas are |

7 | 7 | | celebrating Habitat for Humanity Day on February 7, 2023; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Homeownership plays a significant role in enhancing |
---|
9 | 9 | | the quality of life in our communities, and Texas has faced a |
---|
10 | 10 | | critical shortage of affordable homes, with a 500,000-home deficit; |
---|
11 | 11 | | in addition, one in seven homeowners pay more than half their income |
---|
12 | 12 | | on housing; there are many causes for the lack of affordable |
---|
13 | 13 | | housing, including issues related to marginalization, land-use |
---|
14 | 14 | | policy, inequality, high population density, and natural |
---|
15 | 15 | | disasters; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity Texas and its local affiliates |
---|
17 | 17 | | strive to help build a better future for people across the state; |
---|
18 | 18 | | these organizations unite residents and enable them to construct |
---|
19 | 19 | | homes in their communities, and they work to expand access to |
---|
20 | 20 | | affordable homes through advocacy, resource development, |
---|
21 | 21 | | education, training, and disaster preparedness and response; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the Habitat for Humanity network in |
---|
23 | 23 | | Texas has collectively helped over 13,500 families obtain safe |
---|
24 | 24 | | housing in 60 areas throughout the state; since 1977, the network |
---|
25 | 25 | | has built more than 8,500 new homes, repaired nearly 5,000, and |
---|
26 | 26 | | rehabilitated almost 600; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity Texas has made homeownership a |
---|
28 | 28 | | reality for numerous families in the Lone Star State, and the |
---|
29 | 29 | | dedicated members of the organization are truly deserving of |
---|
30 | 30 | | recognition for their contributions to this important cause; now, |
---|
31 | 31 | | therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature |
---|
33 | 33 | | hereby recognize February 7, 2023, as Habitat For Humanity Day and |
---|
34 | 34 | | commend all those associated with the organization for their |
---|
35 | 35 | | efforts; and, be it further |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
37 | 37 | | prepared for Habitat for Humanity Texas as an expression of high |
---|
38 | 38 | | regard by the Texas Senate. |
