66 WHEREAS, Members of Habitat for Humanity Texas are
77 celebrating Habitat for Humanity Day on February 7, 2023; and
88 WHEREAS, Homeownership plays a significant role in enhancing
99 the quality of life in our communities, and Texas has faced a
1010 critical shortage of affordable homes, with a 500,000-home deficit;
1111 in addition, one in seven homeowners pay more than half their income
1212 on housing; there are many causes for the lack of affordable
1313 housing, including issues related to marginalization, land-use
1414 policy, inequality, high population density, and natural
1515 disasters; and
1616 WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity Texas and its local affiliates
1717 strive to help build a better future for people across the state;
1818 these organizations unite residents and enable them to construct
1919 homes in their communities, and they work to expand access to
2020 affordable homes through advocacy, resource development,
2121 education, training, and disaster preparedness and response; and
2222 WHEREAS, Over the years, the Habitat for Humanity network in
2323 Texas has collectively helped over 13,500 families obtain safe
2424 housing in 60 areas throughout the state; since 1977, the network
2525 has built more than 8,500 new homes, repaired nearly 5,000, and
2626 rehabilitated almost 600; and
2727 WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity Texas has made homeownership a
2828 reality for numerous families in the Lone Star State, and the
2929 dedicated members of the organization are truly deserving of
3030 recognition for their contributions to this important cause; now,
3131 therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
3333 hereby recognize February 7, 2023, as Habitat For Humanity Day and
3434 commend all those associated with the organization for their
3535 efforts; and, be it further
3636 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3737 prepared for Habitat for Humanity Texas as an expression of high
3838 regard by the Texas Senate.
