1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 146
2	2	WHEREAS, Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas are
3	3	gathering in Austin on February 22, 2023, to participate in
4	4	Sheriffs' Association of Texas Day at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The Texas Constitution created the office of
6	6	sheriff in each county of the state; legislation requires that a
7	7	sheriff conserve peace and enforce the criminal laws of the
8	8	state; moreover, the sheriff is responsible for the county jail,
9	9	bail bonds, civil process, and the security of the courts; in
10	10	some smaller counties, the sheriff may also act as the tax
11	11	collector; and
12	12	WHEREAS, The first meeting of this esteemed association
13	13	took place on August 14, 1874, making this group one of the oldest
14	14	law enforcement organizations in the nation; association members
15	15	adopted their preamble calling for sheriffs to assist one another
16	16	in the execution of laws, in the discharge of their duties
17	17	against criminals, and in the protection of the citizens in their
18	18	respective counties and throughout the state; through the years,
19	19	the association has continued to follow the dictates of this
20	20	mission; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Sheriffs in our state's 254 counties are elected
22	22	to four-year terms, and each sheriff is a member of the Sheriffs'
23	23	Association of Texas; in addition, more than 2,500 individuals
24	24	are active members of the group, and over 50,000 others are
25	25	honorary members; and
26	26	WHEREAS, The men and women of the Sheriffs' Association of
27	27	Texas are helping to make the Lone Star State an even safer place,
28	28	and their work benefits countless people each day; now,
29	29	therefore, be it
30	30	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
31	31	Legislature, hereby recognize February 22, 2023, as Sheriffs'
32	32	Association of Texas Day at the State Capitol and commend the
33	33	members of the organization for their many contributions to their
34	34	communities; and, be it further
35	35	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
36	36	prepared for the Sheriffs' Association of Texas as an expression
37	37	of high regard from the Texas Senate.
