11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 146
22 WHEREAS, Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas are
33 gathering in Austin on February 22, 2023, to participate in
44 Sheriffs' Association of Texas Day at the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, The Texas Constitution created the office of
66 sheriff in each county of the state; legislation requires that a
77 sheriff conserve peace and enforce the criminal laws of the
88 state; moreover, the sheriff is responsible for the county jail,
99 bail bonds, civil process, and the security of the courts; in
1010 some smaller counties, the sheriff may also act as the tax
1111 collector; and
1212 WHEREAS, The first meeting of this esteemed association
1313 took place on August 14, 1874, making this group one of the oldest
1414 law enforcement organizations in the nation; association members
1515 adopted their preamble calling for sheriffs to assist one another
1616 in the execution of laws, in the discharge of their duties
1717 against criminals, and in the protection of the citizens in their
1818 respective counties and throughout the state; through the years,
1919 the association has continued to follow the dictates of this
2020 mission; and
2121 WHEREAS, Sheriffs in our state's 254 counties are elected
2222 to four-year terms, and each sheriff is a member of the Sheriffs'
2323 Association of Texas; in addition, more than 2,500 individuals
2424 are active members of the group, and over 50,000 others are
2525 honorary members; and
2626 WHEREAS, The men and women of the Sheriffs' Association of
2727 Texas are helping to make the Lone Star State an even safer place,
2828 and their work benefits countless people each day; now,
2929 therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3131 Legislature, hereby recognize February 22, 2023, as Sheriffs'
3232 Association of Texas Day at the State Capitol and commend the
3333 members of the organization for their many contributions to their
3434 communities; and, be it further
3535 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3636 prepared for the Sheriffs' Association of Texas as an expression
3737 of high regard from the Texas Senate.
