6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

7 | 7 | | passing of Curtis Williams Mewbourne of Tyler on June 23, 2022, at |

8 | 8 | | the age of 86; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Ruth and Curtis Mewbourne, Mr. Mewbourne |
---|
10 | 10 | | was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on November 14, 1935, and he grew |
---|
11 | 11 | | up with a brother, Tom; he enjoyed a wonderful childhood, working on |
---|
12 | 12 | | his parents' ranch, visiting his grandmother in New Orleans, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | working dogs and hunting quail; a gifted athlete, he helped win a |
---|
14 | 14 | | state title in track, and he played quarterback for the 1953 state |
---|
15 | 15 | | championship football team at Byrd High School; as a student there, |
---|
16 | 16 | | he met the love of his life, the former Joanne Zaenglein; the couple |
---|
17 | 17 | | married on March 7, 1959, and they shared a fulfilling union that |
---|
18 | 18 | | spanned more than six decades; he took great pride in their |
---|
19 | 19 | | daughters, Dorothy, Ruth, and Julie, and their grandchildren, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Cameron, Kirby, Morgan, Hale, Anna, Merritte, Williams, and |
---|
21 | 21 | | Griffin; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In 1957, Mr. Mewbourne earned a degree in petroleum |
---|
23 | 23 | | engineering at the University of Oklahoma, where he joined the Phi |
---|
24 | 24 | | Gamma Delta fraternity, and he went on to serve in the U.S. Army as a |
---|
25 | 25 | | second lieutenant with the Arlington National Cemetery honor guard; |
---|
26 | 26 | | he subsequently embarked on a successful career in the oil |
---|
27 | 27 | | industry, working with Arkansas Fuel Oil Company in Shreveport and |
---|
28 | 28 | | later with First National Bank in Dallas; in 1965, he established |
---|
29 | 29 | | Mewbourne Oil Company, and the business grew to become one of the |
---|
30 | 30 | | largest privately owned oil and gas companies in the nation, as well |
---|
31 | 31 | | as the top supporter of student scholarships and internships at OU |
---|
32 | 32 | | in the past 25 years; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of Mr. Mewbourne's accomplishments, |
---|
34 | 34 | | OU named the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy and the Mewbourne |
---|
35 | 35 | | School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering in his honor; his |
---|
36 | 36 | | other accolades include the Distinguished Service Award from the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Texas Oil and Gas Association, the Top Hand award from the Permian |
---|
38 | 38 | | Basin Petroleum Association, the Trailblazer award from OU, and an |
---|
39 | 39 | | honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from OU; moreover, he endowed |
---|
40 | 40 | | seven Mewbourne Chairs in Petroleum Engineering and the Mewbourne |
---|
41 | 41 | | Professorship in Petroleum Engineering at the university; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Mewbourne moved with his family to Tyler in |
---|
43 | 43 | | 1971, and he gave of his time and resources to benefit All Saints |
---|
44 | 44 | | Episcopal School, St. John's School in Houston, the music |
---|
45 | 45 | | department at Tyler Junior College, Methodist Children's Home, the |
---|
46 | 46 | | Salvation Army, and PATH Junior Achievement, among other |
---|
47 | 47 | | organizations; he was also a longtime member of Marvin United |
---|
48 | 48 | | Methodist Church; above all else, he delighted in spending time |
---|
49 | 49 | | with his loved ones, and he especially liked hosting Thanksgiving |
---|
50 | 50 | | celebrations at his Lazy M ranch in Oklahoma; and |
---|
51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, Curtis Mewbourne lived a life that was rich in |
---|
52 | 52 | | personal and professional achievements, and he will forever be a |
---|
53 | 53 | | source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be |
---|
54 | 54 | | it |
---|
55 | 55 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature |
---|
56 | 56 | | hereby pay tribute to the memory of Curtis Williams Mewbourne and |
---|
57 | 57 | | extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his passing; and, be it |
---|
58 | 58 | | further |

59 | 59 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

60 | 60 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this |
