55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
77 passing of Curtis Williams Mewbourne of Tyler on June 23, 2022, at
88 the age of 86; and
99 WHEREAS, The son of Ruth and Curtis Mewbourne, Mr. Mewbourne
1010 was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on November 14, 1935, and he grew
1111 up with a brother, Tom; he enjoyed a wonderful childhood, working on
1212 his parents' ranch, visiting his grandmother in New Orleans, and
1313 working dogs and hunting quail; a gifted athlete, he helped win a
1414 state title in track, and he played quarterback for the 1953 state
1515 championship football team at Byrd High School; as a student there,
1616 he met the love of his life, the former Joanne Zaenglein; the couple
1717 married on March 7, 1959, and they shared a fulfilling union that
1818 spanned more than six decades; he took great pride in their
1919 daughters, Dorothy, Ruth, and Julie, and their grandchildren,
2020 Cameron, Kirby, Morgan, Hale, Anna, Merritte, Williams, and
2121 Griffin; and
2222 WHEREAS, In 1957, Mr. Mewbourne earned a degree in petroleum
2323 engineering at the University of Oklahoma, where he joined the Phi
2424 Gamma Delta fraternity, and he went on to serve in the U.S. Army as a
2525 second lieutenant with the Arlington National Cemetery honor guard;
2626 he subsequently embarked on a successful career in the oil
2727 industry, working with Arkansas Fuel Oil Company in Shreveport and
2828 later with First National Bank in Dallas; in 1965, he established
2929 Mewbourne Oil Company, and the business grew to become one of the
3030 largest privately owned oil and gas companies in the nation, as well
3131 as the top supporter of student scholarships and internships at OU
3232 in the past 25 years; and
3333 WHEREAS, In recognition of Mr. Mewbourne's accomplishments,
3434 OU named the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy and the Mewbourne
3535 School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering in his honor; his
3636 other accolades include the Distinguished Service Award from the
3737 Texas Oil and Gas Association, the Top Hand award from the Permian
3838 Basin Petroleum Association, the Trailblazer award from OU, and an
3939 honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from OU; moreover, he endowed
4040 seven Mewbourne Chairs in Petroleum Engineering and the Mewbourne
4141 Professorship in Petroleum Engineering at the university; and
4242 WHEREAS, Mr. Mewbourne moved with his family to Tyler in
4343 1971, and he gave of his time and resources to benefit All Saints
4444 Episcopal School, St. John's School in Houston, the music
4545 department at Tyler Junior College, Methodist Children's Home, the
4646 Salvation Army, and PATH Junior Achievement, among other
4747 organizations; he was also a longtime member of Marvin United
4848 Methodist Church; above all else, he delighted in spending time
4949 with his loved ones, and he especially liked hosting Thanksgiving
5050 celebrations at his Lazy M ranch in Oklahoma; and
5151 WHEREAS, Curtis Mewbourne lived a life that was rich in
5252 personal and professional achievements, and he will forever be a
5353 source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be
5454 it
5555 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
5656 hereby pay tribute to the memory of Curtis Williams Mewbourne and
5757 extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his passing; and, be it
5858 further
5959 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6060 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this
6161 day, it do so in memory of Curtis Mewbourne.
