26 WHEREAS, Proud residents are gathering in Austin on
37 February 13, 2023, to celebrate Hardin County Day at the State
48 Capitol; and
59 WHEREAS, Situated northeast of Houston, Hardin County is
6- predominantly made up of pine and hardwood forests in the East
7- Texas Timberlands region; attracted by the mineral waters of
8- Medicine Lake, Native Americans visited the area long before it
9- became part of the Atascosito District of Spanish and Mexican
10- Texas; attempts at colonization began in earnest in 1834 when the
11- Mexican government made land grants, and in 1835, Stephen Jackson
12- founded a settlement at Sour Lake; and
13- WHEREAS, Following the Texas Revolution, the area was
14- split between the jurisdictions of Liberty and Jefferson
15- Counties; in 1858, the State Legislature established Hardin
16- County, drawing territory from both parent counties; under state
17- law, the county's name honored the Hardin family of Liberty, and
18- the county seat also bore that name; in 1881, the Sabine and East
19- Texas Railroad bypassed Hardin in favor of its own newly
20- established town, Kountze, which ultimately became the county
21- seat; and

30- chambers of commerce in Kountze, Lumberton, Silsbee, and Sour

36- can explore nine different ecosystems; moreover, Village Creek
37- State Park sits along one of the few free-flowing creeks in
38- Texas, and the Roy E. Larsen Sandyland Sanctuary protects diverse
39- plant communities; and
40- WHEREAS, Residents of Hardin County are working together
41- to build an even brighter future, and this special day provides a

44- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
45- Legislature, hereby recognize February 13, 2023, as Hardin
46- County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
47- visiting delegation.
