2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the citizens of Jim Wells County and to join in |
---|
4 | 4 | | celebrating Jim Wells County Day at the State Capitol on |
---|
5 | 5 | | February 14, 2023; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The area known today as Jim Wells County became a |
---|
7 | 7 | | part of Texas after Texas gained independence from Mexico in |
---|
8 | 8 | | 1836, and by 1850, there were extensive landholdings in the area; |
---|
9 | 9 | | railroads soon followed and led to the development of a town, |
---|
10 | 10 | | which was named Alice in 1886 for the daughter of famed Texas |
---|
11 | 11 | | rancher Richard King; Alice eventually became the county seat and |
---|
12 | 12 | | the largest cattle-shipping point in the world; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Jim Wells County was created and organized by the |
---|
14 | 14 | | Texas Legislature on March 11, 1911, and was named for politician |
---|
15 | 15 | | and land developer James B. Wells Jr.; the county contributed |
---|
16 | 16 | | significantly to the development of southwestern Texas, and |
---|
17 | 17 | | since the mid-1800s, its cattle industry has played a key role in |
---|
18 | 18 | | the area's economy; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The first significant oil activity in Jim Wells |
---|
20 | 20 | | County began in 1936, and the first major oil producer was |
---|
21 | 21 | | established northeast of Alice; the county's economy has |
---|
22 | 22 | | benefited not only from the oil business, ranching, cattle |
---|
23 | 23 | | shipping, and cotton and grain production, but also from a fine |
---|
24 | 24 | | public school system, a modern hospital, and the health-services |
---|
25 | 25 | | industry; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The history of Jim Wells County is carefully |
---|
27 | 27 | | preserved at the South Texas Museum, which has been designated a |
---|
28 | 28 | | Texas Historical Landmark; it is indeed fitting that the citizens |
---|
29 | 29 | | of Jim Wells County take pride in their unique heritage as they |
---|
30 | 30 | | celebrate their many contributions to the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
31 | 31 | | therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 14, 2023, as Jim Wells |
---|
34 | 34 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the county's |
---|
35 | 35 | | visiting delegates best wishes for a memorable and productive day |
---|
36 | 36 | | at the Capitol; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
