| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association in observing |

| 4 | 4 | | the fourth Wednesday in February as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Awareness Day; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic disorder |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | that results in the thickening and enlargement of the heart |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | muscle; the condition, which often is undetected, can lead to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and sudden cardiac |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | death; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Although close to 147,000 citizens of Texas have |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which usually develops by the early |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | twenties, 85 percent of Texans remain undiagnosed and in danger |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | of heart deterioration; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Cardiologists, members of HCMA, and volunteers |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | across the nation serve those affected by the disease and work |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | diligently to increase awareness of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | which can cause cardiac arrest even in children; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Organizations across the state and nation are |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | committed to early detection of this disease and to improving the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | lives of those affected by it, and it is truly fitting that a day |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | be set aside to recognize and support these efforts; now, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the fourth Wednesday in February |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day in Texas; and, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | further |
