11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 171
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Stephen F. Austin State University on the occasion of
44 its centennial celebration; and
55 WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University had its
66 beginnings when the Texas Legislature authorized a new
77 institution of higher education to be located in far East Texas
88 and to be named in honor of the Father of Texas, Stephen F.
99 Austin; and
1010 WHEREAS, In 1917, the State Board of Regents selected
1111 Nacogdoches as the location of the new college because of its
1212 rich heritage as the oldest town in Texas; the citizens of
1313 Nacogdoches chose the homestead of Thomas J. Rusk, which had been
1414 owned by Sam Houston, as the site for the new college, as both
1515 Rusk and Houston had served as the original two United States
1616 Senators from Texas; and
1717 WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College opened
1818 its doors to 270 students in 1923; today, the university enrolls
1919 more than 11,300 students and provides a vital educational,
2020 economic, and cultural resource in the region; the heart of
2121 higher education in deep East Texas, the university offers more
2222 than 120 areas of study and countless opportunities for student
2323 athletes to participate in Division I intercollegiate sports,
2424 bringing recognition and a sense of pride to the Nacogdoches
2525 area; and
2626 WHEREAS, Named the top rural-serving institution of its
2727 size in Texas by the Alliance for Research on Regional Colleges,
2828 Stephen F. Austin State University now comprises six colleges;
2929 its living alumni number 115,000 graduates who have been educated
3030 by this fine university to be true citizens of the world; and
3131 WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University has for 100
3232 years been dedicated to creating opportunities for students to
3333 access transformative higher education; alumni represent their
3434 university in their communities and workplaces, and they
3535 contribute to the economic, civic, and cultural vitality of
3636 Texas; it is truly fitting that the university receive special
3737 recognition on the occasion of this important milestone in the
3838 school's history; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4040 Legislature, hereby recognize 2023 as the Centennial Year of
4141 Stephen F. Austin State University and extend a warm welcome to
4242 the visiting delegation; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
