2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize Stephen F. Austin State University on the occasion of |
---|
4 | 4 | | its centennial celebration; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University had its |
---|
6 | 6 | | beginnings when the Texas Legislature authorized a new |
---|
7 | 7 | | institution of higher education to be located in far East Texas |
---|
8 | 8 | | and to be named in honor of the Father of Texas, Stephen F. |
---|
9 | 9 | | Austin; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, In 1917, the State Board of Regents selected |
---|
11 | 11 | | Nacogdoches as the location of the new college because of its |
---|
12 | 12 | | rich heritage as the oldest town in Texas; the citizens of |
---|
13 | 13 | | Nacogdoches chose the homestead of Thomas J. Rusk, which had been |
---|
14 | 14 | | owned by Sam Houston, as the site for the new college, as both |
---|
15 | 15 | | Rusk and Houston had served as the original two United States |
---|
16 | 16 | | Senators from Texas; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College opened |
---|
18 | 18 | | its doors to 270 students in 1923; today, the university enrolls |
---|
19 | 19 | | more than 11,300 students and provides a vital educational, |
---|
20 | 20 | | economic, and cultural resource in the region; the heart of |
---|
21 | 21 | | higher education in deep East Texas, the university offers more |
---|
22 | 22 | | than 120 areas of study and countless opportunities for student |
---|
23 | 23 | | athletes to participate in Division I intercollegiate sports, |
---|
24 | 24 | | bringing recognition and a sense of pride to the Nacogdoches |
---|
25 | 25 | | area; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Named the top rural-serving institution of its |
---|
27 | 27 | | size in Texas by the Alliance for Research on Regional Colleges, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Stephen F. Austin State University now comprises six colleges; |
---|
29 | 29 | | its living alumni number 115,000 graduates who have been educated |
---|
30 | 30 | | by this fine university to be true citizens of the world; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University has for 100 |
---|
32 | 32 | | years been dedicated to creating opportunities for students to |
---|
33 | 33 | | access transformative higher education; alumni represent their |
---|
34 | 34 | | university in their communities and workplaces, and they |
---|
35 | 35 | | contribute to the economic, civic, and cultural vitality of |
---|
36 | 36 | | Texas; it is truly fitting that the university receive special |
---|
37 | 37 | | recognition on the occasion of this important milestone in the |
---|
38 | 38 | | school's history; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby recognize 2023 as the Centennial Year of |
---|
41 | 41 | | Stephen F. Austin State University and extend a warm welcome to |
---|
42 | 42 | | the visiting delegation; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
44 | 44 | | them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
