55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Kenneth Louis Koock, who died on
77 December 19, 2022, at the age of 86; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on May 5, 1936, Kenneth Louis Koock was
99 raised at Green Pastures, his family's historic homestead near
1010 downtown Austin; there, Ken and his siblings experienced the joys
1111 and hard work of growing up on a farm and learned the values of
1212 acceptance, kindness, and compassion instilled in them by their
1313 parents; and
1414 WHEREAS, Ken graduated from Saint Edward's High School and
1515 attended Georgetown University; he completed his studies at The
1616 University of Texas at Austin, and he served as a Merchant Marine
1717 and went on to serve with distinction in the United States Army;
1818 and
1919 WHEREAS, Ken took over the management of Green Pastures,
2020 the family-run restaurant his parents had converted the farm and
2121 homestead into in 1946; the restaurant had always operated under
2222 the principle of welcoming people of all races and religions,
2323 even during the segregation era, and Ken proudly carried on this
2424 practice and philosophy in his business as well as throughout his
2525 life; and
2626 WHEREAS, Ken and his longtime business partner, Lee
2727 Buslett, ran the restaurant with charm and attention to detail,
2828 and their combined efforts and expertise in both business and the
2929 culinary arts led Green Pastures to earn national acclaim; the
3030 restaurant attracted many loyal regular customers as well as such
3131 notable guests as presidents, royalty, celebrities, and heads of
3232 state; Ken's success and enjoyment of the business inspired him
3333 to open a number of other popular restaurants in later years; and
3434 WHEREAS, Ken was active in his community and enjoyed a wide
3535 variety of hobbies and activities; a skilled pie-maker, golfer,
3636 and pilot, Ken served as president of the South Austin Rotary
3737 Club and the Texas Aviation Association, and he successfully
3838 advocated funding from the Federal Aviation Administration to
3939 build small-plane hangars at Austin-Bergstrom International
4040 Airport; and
4141 WHEREAS, A devoted father to his daughters, Kathryn and
4242 Molly, and a loving husband to his wife of 27 years, Carol Ann
4343 Koock, Ken was also blessed with two stepsons, John and Chris,
4444 and with eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, who were
4545 a source of much pride and joy to him; Ken was a remarkable and
4646 inspiring person whose generous spirit and positive outlook
4747 defined his interactions with people from all walks of life; he
4848 leaves behind memories that will long be cherished by his family
4949 and friends and by the countless others who were privileged to
5050 share in his life; now, therefore, be it
5151 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
5252 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5353 family of Kenneth Louis Koock; and, be it further
5454 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5555 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5656 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5757 memory of Kenneth L. Koock.
