4	4	Kenneth Louis Koock
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	6	commemorates the life of Kenneth Louis Koock, who died on
7	7	December 19, 2022, at the age of 86; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born on May 5, 1936, Kenneth Louis Koock was
9	9	raised at Green Pastures, his family's historic homestead near
10	10	downtown Austin; there, Ken and his siblings experienced the joys
11	11	and hard work of growing up on a farm and learned the values of
12	12	acceptance, kindness, and compassion instilled in them by their
13	13	parents; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Ken graduated from Saint Edward's High School and
15	15	attended Georgetown University; he completed his studies at The
16	16	University of Texas at Austin, and he served as a Merchant Marine
17	17	and went on to serve with distinction in the United States Army;
18	18	and
19	19	WHEREAS, Ken took over the management of Green Pastures,
20	20	the family-run restaurant his parents had converted the farm and
21	21	homestead into in 1946; the restaurant had always operated under
22	22	the principle of welcoming people of all races and religions,
23	23	even during the segregation era, and Ken proudly carried on this
24	24	practice and philosophy in his business as well as throughout his
25	25	life; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Ken and his longtime business partner, Lee
27	27	Buslett, ran the restaurant with charm and attention to detail,
28	28	and their combined efforts and expertise in both business and the
29	29	culinary arts led Green Pastures to earn national acclaim; the
30	30	restaurant attracted many loyal regular customers as well as such
31	31	notable guests as presidents, royalty, celebrities, and heads of
32	32	state; Ken's success and enjoyment of the business inspired him
33	33	to open a number of other popular restaurants in later years; and
34	34	WHEREAS, Ken was active in his community and enjoyed a wide
35	35	variety of hobbies and activities; a skilled pie-maker, golfer,
36	36	and pilot, Ken served as president of the South Austin Rotary
37	37	Club and the Texas Aviation Association, and he successfully
38	38	advocated funding from the Federal Aviation Administration to
39	39	build small-plane hangars at Austin-Bergstrom International
40	40	Airport; and
41	41	WHEREAS, A devoted father to his daughters, Kathryn and
42	42	Molly, and a loving husband to his wife of 27 years, Carol Ann
43	43	Koock, Ken was also blessed with two stepsons, John and Chris,
44	44	and with eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, who were
45	45	a source of much pride and joy to him; Ken was a remarkable and
46	46	inspiring person whose generous spirit and positive outlook
47	47	defined his interactions with people from all walks of life; he
48	48	leaves behind memories that will long be cherished by his family
49	49	and friends and by the countless others who were privileged to
50	50	share in his life; now, therefore, be it
51	51	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
52	52	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
53	53	family of Kenneth Louis Koock; and, be it further
54	54	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
55	55	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
56	56	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
57	57	memory of Kenneth L. Koock.
