5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
26 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
37 welcome the residents of McAllen, who are celebrating their
48 city's 112th anniversary and City of McAllen Day at the State
59 Capitol on February 16, 2023; and
610 WHEREAS, The City of McAllen traces its roots back to 1797,
711 when Spanish settler Jose Manuel Gomez founded the Santa Anita
812 Ranch in what is now southern Hidalgo County; his
913 great-granddaughter, Salome Balli, married John McAllen and
1014 inherited the property, and the couple expanded the ranch and
1115 renamed it McAllen Ranch; and
1216 WHEREAS, With the arrival of the Saint Louis, Brownsville,
1317 and Mexico Railroad, John McAllen founded the McAllen Townsite
1418 Company and the McAllen community in 1904; the town merged with
1519 nearby East McAllen, and by 1920, McAllen was home to businesses,
1620 churches, a newspaper, and 6,000 residents; and
1721 WHEREAS, Located in the Rio Grande Valley, McAllen lies
1822 within one of the fastest-growing metropolitan statistical areas
1923 in the nation; McAllen has been recognized as one of the safest
2024 cities in the nation and has been ranked among the best places to
2125 live in the country and in Texas; and
2226 WHEREAS, A vibrant commercial and cultural hub, McAllen is
2327 home to Quinta Mazatlan, a Spanish-revival estate and urban oasis
2428 featuring tropical gardens where walking trails wind through
2529 more than 15 acres of bird habitat that shelters more than 250
2630 species of birds; Quinta Mazatlan serves as a conference and
2731 events center, and it has received recognition in the area as the
2832 best outdoor venue, upper-valley venue, and photography
2933 location; and
30- WHEREAS, McAllen also boasts one of the lowest property tax
31- rates in the Rio Grande Valley thanks to the city's retail tax
34+ WHEREAS, McAllen also boasts one of the lowest property
35+ tax rates in the Rio Grande Valley thanks to the city's retail tax
3236 strength, and in 2022, Governor Greg Abbott designated McAllen a
3337 Music Friendly City; this designation will allow the city to
3438 foster new cultural and economic development related to the music
3539 industry and will benefit the city and its residents; and
3640 WHEREAS, As they celebrate City of McAllen Day at the
3741 Capitol and their city's 112th anniversary, the residents of
3842 McAllen can take justifiable pride in their city's rich and
3943 colorful history as they look ahead and work toward a bright
4044 future; now, therefore, be it
4145 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4246 Legislature, hereby commend the residents of McAllen on their
4347 many contributions to the vitality of the Lone Star State and
4448 extend to all best wishes for a memorable City of McAllen Day at
4549 the Capitol; and, be it further
4650 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4751 honor of this special occasion.
