2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great |

3 | 3 | | pleasure in joining the citizens of Chambers County for the |

4 | 4 | | celebration of Chambers County Day at the Capitol on |
---|
5 | 5 | | February 22, 2023; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Situated on 600 square miles of Gulf Coast plains, |
---|
7 | 7 | | Chambers County has a long and colorful history; in 1756, |
---|
8 | 8 | | Spaniards erected a mission and presidio near present-day |
---|
9 | 9 | | Wallisville to ensure control of the region, and in 1818, a group |
---|
10 | 10 | | of French supporters of Napoleon Bonaparte established a |
---|
11 | 11 | | short-lived colony near present-day Anahuac; in 1832 and 1835, |
---|
12 | 12 | | conflicts at Anahuac between Anglo immigrants and Mexican |
---|
13 | 13 | | authorities foreshadowed the Texas Revolution; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Chambers County was created from portions of |
---|
15 | 15 | | Liberty and Jefferson Counties in 1858 and named in honor of |
---|
16 | 16 | | General T. J. Chambers; Wallisville was the county seat until |
---|
17 | 17 | | 1908, when that role was transfered to Anahuac; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Countless tourists are drawn to the attractions |
---|
19 | 19 | | and events offered by Chambers County; Anahuac, known as the |
---|
20 | 20 | | Alligator Capital of Texas, hosts the Texas Gatorfest each |
---|
21 | 21 | | September at Fort Anahuac Park; another celebration is the Texas |
---|
22 | 22 | | Rice Festival, which is held in September and October; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Visitors are also drawn by the area's historic |
---|
24 | 24 | | sites and excellent golf courses and by the bountiful |
---|
25 | 25 | | opportunities for birding, fishing, hunting, crabbing, boating, |
---|
26 | 26 | | and photography; among the attractions are Wallisville Heritage |
---|
27 | 27 | | Park, Houston Raceway Park, Moody National Wildlife Refuge, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, and the Corps of Engineers |
---|
29 | 29 | | Trinity River Recreation Area; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In addition to tourism, the county's economy |
---|
31 | 31 | | benefits from such enterprises as chemical plants and fish and |
---|
32 | 32 | | oyster processing, as well as from business in manufacturing and |
---|
33 | 33 | | agribusiness; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Chambers County is situated between Houston and |
---|
35 | 35 | | the Golden Triangle of Beaumont-Orange-Port Arthur, and it |
---|
36 | 36 | | offers its people both quiet rural living and convenient access |
---|
37 | 37 | | to big-city amenities; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, The residents of Chambers County are justifiably |
---|
39 | 39 | | proud of their achievements, for this noteworthy region and its |
---|
40 | 40 | | citizens have played a significant role in the development of the |
---|
41 | 41 | | Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 22, 2023, as Chambers |
---|
44 | 44 | | County Day at the Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the fine |
---|
45 | 45 | | citizens who have traveled to Austin to celebrate this occasion; |
---|
46 | 46 | | and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
48 | 48 | | the people of Chambers County as a memento of this special |
---|
49 | 49 | | occasion. |
