2	2	WHEREAS, Proud citizens from Amarillo and other Texas
3	3	Panhandle communities are visiting Austin on February 21, 2023,
4	4	to celebrate Panhandle Day at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The Panhandle is a thriving region of the state
6	6	and is home to one of the oldest inhabited places in Texas; Palo
7	7	Duro Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the country, stretches
8	8	through the northern part of the region, offering spectacular
9	9	views and revealing through its exposed strata a geologic record
10	10	spanning some 250 million years; and
11	11	WHEREAS, Rich in history, the region is also known for its
12	12	traditional ranch lands, crop and meat production, large areas of
13	13	oil and gas reserves, major industry, and a nationally recognized
14	14	workforce; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Amarillo, the principal northern city of the
16	16	Panhandle, is a dynamic urban center with a population of more
17	17	than 200,000 and a wide array of cultural amenities; contributing
18	18	to Amarillo's economic vitality is Bell, formerly known as Bell
19	19	Helicopter, which is a final assembly center for the V-22 Osprey,
20	20	the UH-1Y and AH-1Z, and the 525 Relentless helicopters;
21	21	additionally, a site operated by CNS Pantex for the U.S.
22	22	Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration is
23	23	the only assembly-disassembly plant for the nation's nuclear
24	24	weapons arsenal; and
25	25	WHEREAS, A region of many exemplary citizens and community
26	26	leaders, the Texas Panhandle is also home to excellent
27	27	educational institutions; the Texas Tech University System,
28	28	including its medical, law, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine
29	29	schools, and West Texas A&M University are among the premier
30	30	institutions in Texas and boast ever-increasing enrollments,
31	31	nationally recognized programs and faculty, and outstanding
32	32	graduates; Amarillo College is one of the finest community
33	33	colleges in the country, and Wayland Baptist University, Frank
34	34	Phillips College, and Clarendon College also offer excellent
35	35	opportunities for higher education in the area; and
36	36	WHEREAS, Attractions in the region include the
37	37	Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, which is located on the
38	38	campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon and is the largest
39	39	history museum in the state; moreover, the Texas Tech University
40	40	campus is host to many restored structures at the National
41	41	Ranching Heritage Center, a 27-acre museum and outdoor
42	42	historical park that traces the evolution of ranch architecture
43	43	and the history of the cattle industry in Texas; and
44	44	WHEREAS, Renowned for their friendliness and warmth, the
45	45	residents of the Panhandle region have helped build vital urban
46	46	centers that serve not only a large part of Texas but also eastern
47	47	New Mexico, and it is a pleasure to join in paying tribute to the
48	48	region's rich heritage; now, therefore, be it
49	49	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
50	50	Legislature, hereby recognize February 21, 2023, as Panhandle
51	51	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the delegations in
52	52	attendance sincere appreciation for their contributions to the
53	53	Lone Star State.
