| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Wharton County are gathering in |

| 3 | 3 | | Austin on February 28, 2023, to celebrate Wharton County Day at |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Led by Stephen F. Austin under contract with the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Mexican government, prospective landowners first came to the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | plains of the Colorado River in 1822; the Mexican Imperial |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Colonization Law of 1823 granted 177 acres to the heads of |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | families for farming and 4,428 acres for raising cattle; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Wharton County was founded in April of 1846, and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | its name commemorates two heroes of the Texas Revolution, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | brothers William Harris Wharton and John Austin Wharton; the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | advent of railroads and irrigation brought increased settlement |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | to the area, which remains a center of agricultural, educational, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | industrial, and medical services for a large region; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Today, nearly 42,000 people call the county home; |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | encompassing just over 1,000 square miles of primarily prairie |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | and timberland, it is divided roughly in half by the Colorado |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | River, which flows through the communities of Wharton and Glen |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Flora; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The county seat, Wharton is known for its |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | small-town way of life and its Czech, Danish, and Mexican |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | heritage, as well as for its proximity to both Houston and the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Gulf Coast, its excellent schools and championship football |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | teams, and its popular festivals; the area also attracts visitors |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | seeking hunting and outdoor recreation opportunities; the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | county's other largest towns include El Campo, East Bernard, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Boling, and Louise; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, With their resilience and strong sense of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | community, the people of Wharton County are working to preserve |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the best of their past as they build an even brighter future, and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | it is indeed fitting to honor them for their unique contributions |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | to the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as Wharton |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | visiting delegation. |
