55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Mary C. Nelson, who died January 8,
77 2023, at the age of 70; and
88 WHEREAS, Mary Nelson was a treasured Texan and a beloved
99 citizen of Austin who led a life of purpose through her tireless
1010 dedication to her endeavors, her family, and her community; and
1111 WHEREAS, Mary was born on January 22, 1952, in Houston; the
1212 eldest child of a United States Air Force officer, Mary lived in
1313 locations throughout the United States and England before her
1414 family moved to Austin in 1970; she attended The University of
1515 Texas while working as a cinema projectionist at local movie
1616 theaters, and she eventually became the first female union master
1717 projectionist in the country; and
1818 WHEREAS, Intelligent and driven, Mary served on
1919 countless movie and commercial sets throughout her career and
2020 skillfully performed a variety of roles including electrician,
2121 key grip, key rigging grip, and best boy; she was a lifelong
2222 advocate of unions and a champion of labor rights, and she was
2323 an active member of the International Alliance of Theatrical
2424 Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and
2525 Allied Crafts union; she served as business agent of the
2626 union's Local 205, and she also served as the business agent
2727 for the Film and Movie Mechanics Local 484; and
2828 WHEREAS, A trailblazer in many regards, Mary found success
2929 in a male-dominated industry, and her strength, expertise, and
3030 leadership broke barriers for women in entertainment production;
3131 in the 1970s, she trained as a power lifter and competed against
3232 men, often winning her competitions at a time when few or no women
3333 competed; she served as the first female director of production
3434 at the Paramount and Stateside Theaters in Austin, and she served
3535 for several years as the director of production for the Moontower
3636 Comedy Festival; and
3737 WHEREAS, Mary and her beloved husband, Sandy Gilzow,
3838 started their own company, Shur-Rig, in 2012 to provide
3939 high-quality rigging for art and entertainment installations
4040 across the state; for the past decade, their passion for
4141 production and keen attention to detail has helped great works of
4242 art come to life, and Mary found it especially rewarding to work
4343 to help low-income and community theaters succeed in their
4444 productions; and
4545 WHEREAS, Mary was a loving wife, mother, and sister and a
4646 trusted mentor and friend to many; her generous and courageous
4747 spirit and her loving and joyful example were a source of
4848 inspiration in the lives of others, and she leaves behind
4949 memories that will long be cherished by her family and friends
5050 and by all who were privileged to share in her life; now,
5151 therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
5353 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5454 family of Mary C. Nelson; and, be it further
5555 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5656 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5757 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5858 memory of Mary C. Nelson.
