3 | 3 | | Austin on February 22, 2023, to pay tribute to their city's rich |
---|
4 | 4 | | heritage and to celebrate Lubbock Day at the State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A thriving region of the state, the Lubbock area |
---|
6 | 6 | | is one of the oldest inhabited places in Texas; archeologists |
---|
7 | 7 | | have discovered evidence of some 12,000 years of continuous |
---|
8 | 8 | | habitation at the Lubbock Lake Landmark site, a national historic |
---|
9 | 9 | | and state archeological preserve; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The City of Lubbock was incorporated on March 16, |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1909; railroads stimulated the city's growth as a trade center, |
---|
12 | 12 | | and residents also wanted the benefits of an institution of |
---|
13 | 13 | | higher learning; when legislation creating Texas Technological |
---|
14 | 14 | | College was passed in 1923, the site selection committee, |
---|
15 | 15 | | impressed by the enthusiasm and hospitality of its citizens, |
---|
16 | 16 | | chose Lubbock for its location; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today a city and surrounding area of more than |
---|
18 | 18 | | 300,000 people, Lubbock is home to the Texas Tech University |
---|
19 | 19 | | System and its flagship institution, Texas Tech University, a |
---|
20 | 20 | | school well-deserving of its Tier One status; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center attracts |
---|
22 | 22 | | nearly 5,000 students from around the world and is currently |
---|
23 | 23 | | ranked as the number one health university in the nation by the SR |
---|
24 | 24 | | Education Group, ranking higher than programs at such other |
---|
25 | 25 | | notable institutions as Harvard University, Stanford University, |
---|
26 | 26 | | and Yale University; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Three universities, including Texas Tech and one |
---|
28 | 28 | | public community college, annually draw more than 50,000 |
---|
29 | 29 | | students to the area and refresh the local economy with |
---|
30 | 30 | | approximately 10,000 new graduates each year, creating a |
---|
31 | 31 | | community where more than 30 percent of residents over the age of |
---|
32 | 32 | | 25 hold a college degree or higher; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Texas Tech's athletic programs have recently |
---|
34 | 34 | | achieved historic successes; the men's basketball team has |
---|
35 | 35 | | recently reached the Final Four, the baseball team has appeared |
---|
36 | 36 | | four times in the College World Series in the past decade, and the |
---|
37 | 37 | | men's outdoor track and field team has earned national |
---|
38 | 38 | | championships, while Lubbock Christian University's women's |
---|
39 | 39 | | basketball team won national championships in 2016, 2019, and |
---|
40 | 40 | | 2021; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Lubbock's metropolitan-area labor force comprises |

42 | 42 | | 165,000 workers, and the cost of doing business ranks as one of |

43 | 43 | | the lowest in the nation, with some of the lowest costs for |

44 | 44 | | electric and natural gas utilities, wage rates, affordable land, |
---|

46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Lubbock is consistently recognized by national |

47 | 47 | | organizations for its business-friendly atmosphere, including |
---|
48 | 48 | | being named the number one city for women professionals; it is |
---|
49 | 49 | | ranked in the top 20 cities for young entrepreneurs starting a |
---|
50 | 50 | | business and was named seventh in the Forbes list of top |
---|
51 | 51 | | "Opportunity Cities," based on its low cost of living, its |
---|
52 | 52 | | cultural resources, and the strength of its business |
---|
53 | 53 | | community; and |
---|
54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, Lubbock has a diverse economy that draws its |

55 | 55 | | strength from agribusiness, manufacturing, and commerce as |

56 | 56 | | well as from educational and health care services, boasting |
---|
57 | 57 | | the largest medical infrastructure between Dallas and Phoenix; |
---|
58 | 58 | | with the growth of the cotton industry on the High Plains, |

59 | 59 | | Lubbock has become one of the world's primary centers for the |

60 | 60 | | processing of cottonseed and hybrid-grain sorghum seed; the |
---|
61 | 61 | | region north of Lubbock has the highest density of cattle in |
---|
62 | 62 | | the entire country; and |
---|
63 | 63 | | WHEREAS, Lubbock is now the home of several major |

64 | 64 | | award-winning wineries and vineyards that produce more than 80 |

65 | 65 | | percent of the state's wine grapes; and |

66 | 66 | | WHEREAS, Lubbock offers a wealth of cultural and |

67 | 67 | | recreational opportunities, including the Lubbock Symphony |

68 | 68 | | Orchestra, the Lubbock Civic Ballet, the Silent Wings Museum, the |

69 | 69 | | Museum and Planetarium of Texas Tech University and many other |

93 | 93 | | WHEREAS, Lubbock's thriving business community is |

95 | 95 | | Plains, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, which expands and guards |

97 | 97 | | WHEREAS, Early major achievements propelled by the chamber |

98 | 98 | | of commerce during more than a century of service include |

99 | 99 | | recruiting farmers from out of state to produce crops on the |

100 | 100 | | fertile soils of the Llano Estacado, working to bring the |

101 | 101 | | railroad to Lubbock, establishing the South Plains Fair, and |

111 | 111 | | WHEREAS, Among the delegation visiting the Capitol today |

112 | 112 | | are members of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce's 47th Leadership |

115 | 115 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Lubbock have truly kept faith with |

116 | 116 | | the founders of their West Texas community; renowned for their |

117 | 117 | | hospitality and warmth as well as their hardiness and |

118 | 118 | | determination, they have helped to build a vital urban center |
